CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Wednesday, September 26, 1990
INCIDENTS
90-311 - Appalachian Trail (Pennsylvania) - Follow-up on Double Homicide
Paul David Crews, who was arrested for the homicides on the Appalachian Trail,
was not listed on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list. Crews was highly sought-
after by the FBI, however, and had appeared on numerous fugitive posters and
circulars. (Telefax from Bill Sanders, CR, ANST, 9/25).
90-338 - Channel Islands (California) - Falling Fatality
T.B. of Bethany, Oklahoma, was hiking with Nature Conservancy guides
on private lands within the park on September 9th when he tripped and fell
approximately 100 feet to the rocky shoreline of Pelican Harbor on Santa Cruz
Island. Despite immediate assistance from two off-duty Ventura firemen/EMT's,
T.B. died from his injuries. He was transported to a hospital in Oxnard
by Coast Guard helicopter. (Jack Fitzgerald, CR, CHIS, via CompuServe message
from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 9/25).
90-339 - Everglades (Florida) - Aircraft Accident
On the afternoon of the 24th, C.H., 22, of Belize, was on his
first solo flight when he became lost. When his fuel began to run low, C.H.
found it necessary to find a place to land, and put his Cessna 150 down on
the main park road near Pavrotis Pond, about ten miles north of Flamingo.
The landing was successful, but C.H., despite his low fuel, then decided to
take off again; as he attempted to do so, he hit a park sign and went off the
road into a ditch. The plane, which is owned by Tac Air and was operated from
the Tamiamia Airport, was seriously damaged, but Hart suffered only minor
injuries. The FAA is investigating. (Telephone report from Steve Smith,
RAD/SERO, 9/25).
90-340 - North Cascades (Washington) - Serious Employee Injury
On September 23rd, seasonal park ranger Andy Ross was dumping a bucket of
water over a rock gulley at Copperridge Lookout when he slipped and fell
approximately fifty feet. Ross was able to climb back up to the lookout,
where a doctor who was hiking through the area helped stabilize his injuries.
A medevac helicopter transported him to a local hospital, where he was treated
for a broken left wrist, two broken toes, and deep lacerations on his lower
left leg and right knee. Ross was to be released from the hospital yesterday.
(CompuServe message from Mark Forbes, RAD/PNR0, 9/25).
