MORNING REPORT

CC: RAD Information Net
Day/date: Monday, October 15, 1990
INCIDENTS
90-361 - Lake Mead (Nevada/Arizona) - Sinking of NPS Boat
On October 10th, the Boulder Beach District's 24-foot Skipjack sank at its
moorings at the government dock in 20 feet of water for unknown reasons.
The boat was raised to its gunnels, but sank again before being stabilized.
The park estimates the cost of commercial salvage and repair at $17,000.
The boat was scheduled for replacement two years ago. (Bud Inman, LAME, via
CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 10/10).
90-362 - Glen Canyon (Arizona/Utah) - Concession Boating Accident
Shortly after dark on October 5th, an 18-foot runabout owned by ARA Leisure
Services struck the lighted breakwater at the Bullfrog Marina. The
operator, J.H., and his passengers, J.D. and R.W.,
all employees of ARA, sustained head and chest injuries. Park
medics and several doctors who were attending a Dive Alert Network (DAN)
seminar extricated the victims and brought them to the Bullfrog Clinic by
NPS boat and ambulance. A St. Mary's Air Life helicopter then transported
them to a hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, while waiting for the
helicopter, J.W. became unstable, and ceased breathing on several
occasions. Additional IV therapy corrected the problem. Alcohol was a
contributing factor in the accident. (CompuServe message from Larry Clark,
CR, GLCA, 10/11).
90-363 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Poaching Convictions
On September 12th, M.J.L., 24, and S.C., 28, both of
West Yellowstone, Montana, plead guilty to 16 USC 26 charges brought against
them for killing two elk in the park en the morning of the 11th. They were
each fined $500, sentenced to 90 days in jail, and placed on three years
probation. The jail time was suspended on the condition that they pay the
fines and not enter the park for three years. M.J.L. and S.C. also
forfeited a rifle, compound bow, and other equipment used to kill and dress
the animals. Investigation into the incident began when a Montana road
maintenance crewman found the head and front quarters of a bull elk at a
trailhead in the northwest part of the park early on the morning of the
11th. Following the receipt of a tip from a concerned citizen and
additional investigation, rangers, a Montana game warden and local police
officers obtained and executed a search warrant for M.J.L. and S.C.'s
residence and vehicle. The hind Quarters were found in a car M.J.L. had
rented on the 10th; other evidence linking them to the poaching was found in
the residence. (CompuServe message from Dan Shelly, CR, YELL, 10/12).
