INCIDENTS

90-413 - North Cascades/Ross Lake/Lake Chelan (Washington) - Flooding

Record amounts of unseasonably warm rainfall, the heaviest since 1930, have
caused major flooding in western Washington. The town of Diablo in Ross
Lake received 11.4 inches of rain in one 24-hour period. Flooding water,
rock and mudslides have caused major damage to roads and trails in North
Cascades, Ross Lake and Lake Chelan, and Highway 20 remains closed with 100
feet of the eastbound lane washed away by a slide at one location. With
more rain forecast, it will be days before the full extent of the damage to
the park can be evaluated. Governor Booth Gardner has declared Skagit and
Whatcom counties to be disaster areas. (SEAdog message from David Spirtes,
CR, NOCA, 11/12).

90-414 - Everglades (Florida) - Search for Downed Aircraft

At 2:30 on the afternoon of November 9th, a commercial pilot flying over the
park saw a twin-engine Cessna flying below him at 4,000 feet blow up in mid.
air and crash. The FAA was notified, and the Coast Guard and Scott AFB
began a search of the area shortly thereafter. Several hours later, a
Minnesota woman reported that a plane which her husband and another couple
were flying in from Key West to Naples had not arrived, and it was soon
determined that this was the plane which had exploded. The park was not
advised of the search until late the following day, when searchers sought
their assistance in finding the remains of the aircraft. At about the same
time, a section of the plane's wing was spotted six miles west of Flamingo.
Rangers assisted in the search for the remainder of the plane the following
day. They were in the air for ten hours before spotting other pieces of the
Cessna in a sawgrass prairie dotted with mangroves and small ponds. Rangers
had to employ canoes to reach the inaccessible area. The largest sections
of the plane were found in one of the ponds. On the 12th, the park flew
NTSB and Cessna investigators to the site. A contractor is to arrive on
site today and remove the aircraft. Killed in the accident were the pilot,
T.S., 70, of Saint Paul, Minnesota; his wife, J.S., 66,
also of Saint Paul; and R.W., 68, of White Bear Lake. (Hunter
Sharp, DR, EVER, via telephone report from Steve Smith, RAD/SERO, 11/13).

90-415 - Saguaro (Arizona) - MVA with Fatality

G.E., 26, of Tucson, Arizona, was killed in a four-car accident on
Picture Rock Road at 12:30 a.m. on the morning of November 10th. G.E. was
five months pregnant at the time; despite efforts of emergency responders,
the child died at the scene about four hours later. Preliminary
investigation indicates that G.E. was driving at an excessive rate of speed
and that she caused the accident. The occupants of the remaining three
vehicles were treated for minor injuries and released. (Bryan Swift, CR,
SAGU, via CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 11/13).
