INCIDENTS

90-416 - Voyageurs (Minnesota) - Poaching Arrests

On November 3rd, ranger Bruce Malloy was on hunting patrol along a remote
section of boundary when he discovered two log cabins hidden in a dense
conifer stand within the park. A network of brushed logging and foot trails
led from the cabins into the park's interior. The cabins were occupied at
the time Malloy discovered them, but the occupants learned of Malloy's
presence in the area and fled before surveillance could be begun. The
subsequent ten-day investigation by Malloy and ranger Hugh Dougher revealed
that the cabins had been used for 15 years as a base for poaching wildlife
in the park. Five suspects have been identified, and are being charged with
violating regulations on illegal hunting, construction of buildings, damage
to natural resources and unattended property. The cabins and contents have
been seized. (Hugh Dougher, VOYA, via CompuServe message from Capt. J.J.
McLaughlin, RAD/MWRO, 11/14).
