INCIDENTS

90-417 - Wind Cave (South Dakota) - Successful Search

On November 11th, a visitor to the park reported he'd lost his two dogs at
one of the park's trailheads. Rangers searched the area, but could not find
either of them. They then had the owner leave his coat at the point where
the dogs were last seen as a scent article. The next morning, both dogs
were found lying on the owner's coat, and were returned to him. The scent
article proved to be what kept the dogs at the point last seen. Other parks
may want to keep this idea in mind when trying to locate lost animals with a
minimum of time and a maximum of efficiency. (CompuServe message from Ed
Pontbriand, WICA, 11/15).

90-418 - National Capital Parks East (Washington, D.C.) - Successful Rescue

Just after 8:00 p.m. on the 13th, S.F., 43, of Fairfax, Virginia,
was driving on Ohio Drive when she lost control of her 1989 Saab, which then
went over an embankment and plunged into the Potomac River. When Park
Police officers arrived, the vehicle was partially submerged and sinking
rapidly. S.F., however, had been able to get out of the car and onto its
roof. One of the responding officers threw her a life ring and pulled her
to shore. S.F. was not injured, and required no medical attention. The
Saab floated about 100 feet downstream before earning to a halt. Initial
reports do not indicate whether it is retrievable. (Telefax from Capt.
Marvin Ellison, RAD/NCRO, 11/15).
