OFFICE NOTES
1) Tom Des Jean, staff archeologist at Big South Fork, has apprised us of
the existence of an organization which is employing fraudulent methods in an
effort to excavate Civil War sites. This operation came to light when an
outfit calling itself the Southeastern Cemetery Removal Company, Inc.,
recently sent a telegram to the town of Allardt, Tennessee, in which they
claimed that a federal judge had authorized them to excavate a Civil War
cemetery and rebury the soldiers elsewhere. The town contacted a state
archeologist, who determined that there was no such federal judge. The
telegram, sent by one Richard Fewshaw, who billed himself as the company's
Superintendent of Services, also claimed that the company's crews would be
supported by a host of archaeologists and other professionals, including "a
representative from the Gettysburg National Park... (and) Lieutenant Buss of
the National Park Service." Parks should inform any neighboring communities
with Civil War sites of the existence of this bogus operation.
