INCIDENTS
90-246 - Olympic (Washington) - Follow-up on Drug Arrest
On August 6th, rangers arrested G.P., 46, a park inholder who lived
near Lake Quinault, on a number of charges pertaining to drug and weapons
possession. On November 3rd, G.P. pled guilty in U.S. District Court to
counts of possession with intent to distribute hashish, possession with
intent to distribute LSD, possession with intent to distribute
methamphetamines, and possession of an unregistered firearm. In conjunction
with his plea, G.P. agreed not to contest the forfeiture of his property.
G.P. was subsequently sentenced to five years and eight months in prison
and five years supervised probation upon release. He is prohibited from
possession of a firearm, must participate in a drug rehabilitation program,
and must submit to a search of his property upon request. G.P.'s arrest
marked the (culmination of an intensive undercover operation which was
conducted in July and August by rangers, U.S. Park Police drug unit
officers, and members of the Grays Harbor drug task force. (SEAdog message
from Bill Frazier, LES, OLYM, 12/4).
90-432 - Cuyahoga Valley (Ohio) - Homicide
The park's roads and trails foreman found the body of a 20-year-old female
face down against a wall in back of the farm house at the old Carter farm at
1:30 p.m. on November 30th. Park rangers and Summitt County Sheriff's
Office deputies are investigating. They have determined that the victim was
murdered, that she was from the Cleveland area, and that she had a prior
record for prostitution and drug possession. (Telephone report from Tom
Thompson, RAD/MWRO, 11/30).
90-433 - Colonial (Virginia) - Oil Spill
On the afternoon of December 4th, approximately 500 gallons of number two
fuel oil leaked from an underground tank at the state office building in
Williamsburg into a drainage ditch which led into the park. Impacts on the
park appear to be minimal due to the rapid response of a local hazardous
material unit. The state has hired a commercial clean-up firm to removal
the oil and rehabilitate impacted areas. (Telephone report from Jim
Burnett, COLO, 12/4).
90-434 - Great Smoky Mountains (North Carolina/Tennessee) - Poaching
At about 4:00 p.m. on December 1st, rangers heard shots fired within the
park. At about the same time, an interagency stakeout team (NPS, USFS and
North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission) which was preparing to begin a
surveillance operation near the Twentymile ranger station saw a vehicle drop
off a man near the point where those shots were fired. The man entered the
woods with a light; he returned about five minutes later and appeared to be
dragging something. The vehicle then returned to pick him up. Team members
moved to stop the vehicle, but a previously unseen lookout vehicle tipped
off the suspects that rangers were on their way. The suspect vehicle
quickly left the area at a high rate of speed. When finally stopped about
four miles away on U.S. Route 129, team members were unable to find either a
weapon or a deer within. A deer carcass was later found on state land, but
trackers followed drag marks to a kill site within the park. The driver of
the vehicle will probably be charged with aiding and abetting, and the
passenger with possession of wildlife. (CompuServe message from Jason
Houck, CR, GRSM, 12/4).
90-435 - Amistad (Texas) - Kidnapping; Assault
Two young girls from Del Rio, Texas, were kidnapped by a 19-year-old male
around 7:30 p.m. on December 2nd, then taken to the San Piedras campground
and sexually assaulted. After the assault, the girls were released in the
park. Park rangers assisted Texas Rangers and Del Rio police officers in
tracking down the suspect, who was found and arrested while washing his car
at a car wash in Del Rio at 9:00 p.m. that evening. Texas Rangers and Del
Rio PD officers are investigating the incident. (Larry Barnet, AMTS, via
CompuServe message from Phil Young, RAD/SWRO, 12/4).
