MIDDLE EAST INCIDENT UPDATE The following information was excerpted from reports which were submitted by J.J. McLaughlin (RAD/MWRO) and Jim Reilly (RAD/RMRO). Our policy is and will be to provide you with general information on Middle East-related activities in the parks, but to exclude any confidential details from reports received from the field. * Jefferson National Expansion installed a magnetometer in the Arch on January 21st. The magnetometer is currently on loan from the Park Police, but the park is planning to purchase several for use as long as circumstances dictate. Patrols have also been augmented. * Rocky Mountain has increased security and completed response plans for any demonstrations which may occur in the park. * Glen Canyon has increased security at the airport and dam. * Mount Rushmore has extended patrol coverage to 24 hours a day. * Bighorn Canyon has increased patrols around the dam and energy-producing facilities and has closed access roads to the dam. * Curecanti is working with the Bureau of Reclamation to expand security at the dam. Please advise us through your regional offices of all threats received, permits issued for demonstrations, and demonstrations or incidents that occur which are related to the war in the Gulf. Reports should be submitted as soon as possible; there is a high degree of interest in such activities in the Department and among other governmental agencies. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Bison Management Over 100 bison were reported along the Madison River from eight to ten miles inside the western boundary on the 22nd, but no bison could be seen from the road in the area the following day. Six bison were located in the Undine Falls area six miles inside the northern boundary, and another 24 were seen well inside the boundary to the east of that group.
