RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION MORNING REPORT Attention: Directorate Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC CC: RAD Information Net Day/date: Friday, September 13, 1991 INCIDENTS 91-482 - Kennesaw Mountain (Georgia) - ARPA Investigation On September 8th, a concerned citizen called the park and reported that two men with metal detectors and large knives were walking along Burnt Hickory Road. Rangers Frank Graham, Kathy Collier, Rick Black and Willie Johnson responded. After a two-hour-long search of the area, the rangers finally found T.S. and his son T.S. on Pigeon Hill. The pair had a metal detector, two large survival knives and a knapsack containing several Civil War minie balls and pieces of artillery projectiles in their possession. After being advised of their rights and interviewed, they agreed to assist in the investigation and led Black and Graham to the area where they had taken most of the artifacts. The area was photographed, measured, covered and secured until the Southeast Archeological Center could be notified. Archeologist George Smith arrived in the park within 24 hours and completed an investigation and site damage assessment for future use in court. Assistant U.S. Attorney Beverly Mitchell was contacted and charges are pending. At this time, each member of the family has been charged under CFR for possession of a metal detector. This is the second case this month in which park rangers have caught people utilizing metal detectors and digging in the park for artifacts.
