RANGER ACTIVITIES DIVISION MORNING REPORT Attention: Directorate Regional and Park Chief Rangers, USPP, BIFC, FLETC Ranger Activities Division Information Network Day/Date: Wednesday, November 27, 1991 INCIDENTS 91-635 - Saint Croix (Wisconsin) - Assist in Barge Recovery On November 22nd, rangers assisted in corralling a runaway 30-ton barge near the Nevers Dam boat landing north of Saint Croix Falls. The incident began when it was discovered that the barge had slipped its moorings from a construction site at a bridge north of Rush City, Minnesota. Authorities feared that the barge would hit and damage a Northern States Power dam at Taylor's Falls and sought to stop it before it reached that location. River ice, 20 degree temperatures and 10 mph winds hampered recovery efforts, but rangers and local law enforcement officers were finally able to get it under control after it had drifted 29 miles down the river. It's not known whether the barge escaped because of rising water from recent snow melt or because someone deliberately set it adrift.
