MORNING REPORT

Ranger Activities Division Information Network
Day/Date: Tuesday, February 4, 1992
INCIDENTS
92-25 - Little Bighorn (Montana) - Theft
Some time during the morning of February 2nd, a display case in the park's
visitor center was pried open and the journal of a 7th Cavalry soldier was
taken. The value of the journal has been placed at approximately $70,000.
FBI and BIA investigators were notified and have been conducting an
investigation into the theft. The display case has been sent to an FBI
laboratory for processing. The case was not alarmed. [Telephone report
from Jim Reilly, RAD/RMRO, 2/3]
92-26 - Joshua Tree (California) - Arson Conviction
M.M., a Marine from Marine Corps base at Twentynine Palms, was
sentenced on February 3rd following a successful prosecution for arson
committed in the park last July. During that incident, two people almost
lost their lives. They were stranded on a ledge and eventually rescued by
park personnel. M.M. was sentenced to three years probation and 200
hours of community service, and was fined $10,750 in restitution costs to
the Service. [Paul Henry, CR, JOTR, via CompuServe message from Herb
Gercke, RAD/WRO, 2/3]
92-27 - Santa Monica Mountains (California) - Drug Labs
Two PCP drug lab sites were discovered in the park late last week. The
first was found on January 31st about a half mile from the spot where
another PCP lab was detected last year. That discovery led to the arrest of
three people and clean-up costs in the thousands of dollars. Evidence at
the new site indicates that drugs were being actively manufactured there for
some time and that the last operation may have taken place as recently as
mid-January. Litter at the site included nine 55-gallon mixing barrels,
several five-gallon ether containers, a variety of chemicals, and water
bottles, discarded clothing, and mixing paddles. Los Angeles county has
assumed responsibility for site clean-up, which should take about three days
and cost several thousand dollars. The second lab was found the next day,
and it's believed that it is still being used. Litter at the lab was
similar to that found at the first site, and included several 55-gallon
mixing barrels and 25 five-gallon ether containers. A joint investigation
into both labs is being conducted by rangers and county narcotics units.
