INCIDENTS
92-33 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Body Discovery
A ranger who was on patrol in the Temple Bar district on February 10th
came upon the body of E.W., 50, of Arlington, Texas, on a boat in
Campanile Cove. E.W. apparently died of a gunshot wound to the head.
An investigation into his death is underway. [Dispatch, LAME, via
CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 2/11]
92-34 - Santa Monica Mountains (California) - Storm Closures
A number of roads in the park were closed on Monday due to flash flooding
caused by a Pacific storm which brought heavy rains to the area.
Employees at Paramount Ranch, Rancho Sierra Vista and Zuma Canyon were
evacuated due to flooding of nearby streams. No details regarding damage
costs are available at this time. [Bill Webb, SAMO, via CompuServe
message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 2/11]
92-35 - Petrified Forest (Arizona) - Criminal Trespass
On the evening of February 6th, ranger Pete Schula, responding to a report
of suspicious persons, discovered three juveniles inside the closed
service station at the Painted Desert concession complex. Rangers Dougher
and Stobinski and state officers responded and assisted in the subsequent
arrests. A loaded .357 revolver was found among the belongings of one of
the individuals. Subsequent investigation revealed that one of the trio
was wanted on a warrant for theft, another was on probation, and two were
members of the "Bloods", a major gang in the United States. All three
were charged with criminal trespass and possession of a concealed weapon.
Later that night, a stolen car was found along I-40 near the Painted
Desert entrance. Investigators believe that it was abandoned by the
suspects, and effort continue to connect the three men with the vehicle.

92-36 - Crater Lake (Oregon) - Employee Rescued
While skiing down a steep stretch of the Dutton Creek Trail on the
afternoon of February 9th, K.W., 37, a long-time Crater Lake ski
patrolman, fell and broke his leg when the tip of one of his skis dug into
deep, soft snow. Other members of his party, including both rangers and
ski patrol personnel, organized White's rescue. Medical and rescue
equipment were transported to the site by skiers, and K.W.'s injury - a
fracture of both bones in his lower left leg - was stabilized by EMT's.
K.W. was placed in a rescue toboggan and towed three miles to a waiting
NPS ambulance. He was then taken to a hospital in Klamath Falls.
Eighteen persons were involved in the rescue. [George Buckingham, CR,
CRLA, via SEAdog message from Mark Forbes, RAD/PNRO, 2/10]
