INCIDENTS

91-21 - Golden Gate (California) - Follow-up on Homicide

On January 18, 1991, rangers on patrol in Marin Headlands came upon two
vehicles fleeing a fire. They requested back-up and were able to stop the
vehicles. Investigators found the body of an adult female in the flames and
arrested M.S.B., M.S.I. and A.S.I. The three were subsequently tried in Contra
Costa County superior court on charges of murder, kidnapping for extortion,
kidnapping resulting in death, false imprisonment and conspiracy. Two of the
three were found guilty and were recently sentenced to life in prison without
possibility of parole. The third is to be retried. [Bob Cheung, GOGA, via
CompuServe message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 3/6]

91-375 - Yosemite (California) - Follow-up on Assault on Ranger

On August 3, 1991, rangers were involved in a confrontation with A.T.
in which they were at one point required to draw their service
revolvers and eventually had to physically subdue him. Several rangers and
visitors were threatened and injured during the incident. A.T. was
subsequently charged with four felony counts of assault on federal officers.
He pled guilty to one of the four counts, and was sentenced to eight months
in jail. A.T. has a long history of violent and drug-related crimes.

3/6]

91-394 - Yosemite (California) - Follow-up on Assault on Ranger

Following an assault on two park rangers on August 10, 1991, J.M.
was charged with two felony counts of assault on a federal officer. J.M.
pled guilty to one count of misdemeanor assault on a federal officer and was
sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years' probation. J.M. has an
extensive history of violent crime. [Rick Obernesser, YOSE, via CompuServe
message from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 3/6]

92-68 - Indiana Dunes (Indiana) - Felony Arrest

On March 3rd, the Porter County sheriff's department broadcast an alert
regarding an armed robbery which had occurred in an area immediately
adjacent to the park. Rangers Brunet and Zwick accordingly began a check of
abandoned residences and wooded areas in the park near the spot where the
robbery had occurred. Ranger Zwick found that one of the abandoned
buildings was unsecured and asked Brunet to help in checking the interior of
the structure. No one was found within. The search of the surrounding area
was resumed, and Brunet soon found a subject lying in a marsh near the
residence. Zwick joined Brunet and the two arrested the man. A realistic
looking water pistol was located on the suspect and taken from him; he was
then turned over to Porter County officers. Although no one was found in
the unsecured building, investigators believe that the suspect may have used
it for shelter earlier in the day. The arrest occurred about two hours
after the robbery. [Dick Littlefield, CR, INDU, via telefax from Rich
Murphy, LES, RAD/MWRO, 3/5]

92-69 - Ozark (Missouri) - Suicide

On March 4th, visitors found the body of A.S.H. of St. Louis
in the Pulltite area of the park. A.S.H., 35, had apparently committed
suicide on February 27th by shooting himself with a shotgun. An NCIC check
showed that A.S.H. had been listed as a missing person with suicidal
tendencies. A note was found with the body which contained a list of
persons to notify, but gave no reason for the suicide. [Tim Blank, CR,
OZAR, via telefax from John Townsend, RAD/MWRO, 3/5]
