INCIDENTS

92-90 - Great Smokies (Tennessee/North Carolina) - MVA with Fatalities

Two people were killed and three others were injured in a head-on collision
on the Newfound Gap Road just after noon on March 25th. It took ambulance
crews and park rangers over an hour to extricate all the victims from their
vehicles and stabilize them for transportation to the Sugarlands visitor
center, where both Medflight and Lifestar helicopters were waiting. At the
time of the accident, snow and rain were falling. The accident is under
investigation. Identities of the victims are unknown at this time. A
follow-up report will appear when more information becomes available. [Don
Utterback, GRSM, via telefax from Marcella Gibson, RAD/SERO, 3/25]

92-91 - Fort Jefferson (Florida) - Storm; EMS Incident

A strong storm front buffeted Tortugas Harbor on the afternoon of the 23rd,
whipping the wind up to 53 knots and throwing boats around the harbor and on
to sandbars and a small key. H.W., 49, of the sailing vessel
"Osprey IV", received a double compound fracture of his right arm when the
wind generator on his sailboat blew apart and vanes from the generator
struck him. The 750-foot Navy vessel "Comstock" was operating in the area
and rushed a physician to the fort to deal with the injury. H.W.'s
injuries were stabilized by the doctor and the park staff, and he was
transported to Key West by the Coast Guard vessel "Padre." [Telefax from
Mark Lewis, LES, EVER, 3/24]

92-92 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - MVA with Fatality

Just after 5:00 a.m. on March 25th, a motorist came upon an upside down
truck off the side of North Shore Road near Callville Bay. Investigating
rangers found that the vehicle had been in an accident, and that the driver,
S.K.J., 47, of Las Vegas, Nevada, had been killed. S.K.J., the
only occupant of the vehicle, apparently fell asleep, awakened when she went
off the road on a curve, then overcorrected and crashed. She was not
wearing a seatbelt. An investigation is being conducted by the Nevada
highway patrol. [Don Hamilton, LAME, via CompuServe message from Kathy
Clark, WRO, 3/25]
