INCIDENTS

92-99 - Glen Canyon (Utah/Arizona) - Follow-up on Possible Homicide

It has been determined that the woman whose body was found in the lake near
the mouth of Antelope Canyon on March 31st was not a homicide victim. The
woman, who has been positively identified as 28-year-old A.L. of
Highlands, California, apparently committed suicide by jumping from a cliff
above the lake. The identification was made after an intensive search of
the surrounding area for clues by fixed wing aircraft, helicopter, boat and
foot. A Coconino County search and rescue team discovered a "walkman" tape
player and keys on the high cliffs overlooking the lake immediately north of
Page last Saturday. Among the keys was one for a General Motors vehicle,
which lead to an intensive search for the car. It was located on Monday in
the Wahweap Marina parking lot about ten miles from the point where the keys
were found. Within the vehicle, which had a car cover over it, was a Bible
with a suicide note written on its last few blank pages. Because of the
note, investigators believe that A.L. probably committed suicide by
jumping from the cliff. Her injuries are consistent with that type of fall,
but the actual cause of death was drowning. [CompuServe message from Larry
Clark, CR, GLCA, 4/15]

92-116 - Big Bend (Texas) - Follow-up on MVA with Fatality

Of the ten students who were injured in the accident, all but two have been
released from the hospital. One remains unconscious but is in stable
condition; the other is being held for observation for possible internal
injuries. Among the injuries incurred in the accident were a fractured
pelvis, fractured limbs, a critical head injury and a spinal injury.
District ranger Andy Ferguson, who was first on scene, performed triage and
served as the incident commander. Other rangers and Terlingua medics
provided EMS care. Two Park Police officers in Big Bend for the Secretary's
visit assisted on scene; Border Patrol, school district and other park
personnel provided a variety of support services, including comforting
survivors who were emotionally distressed by the fatality. The cause of the
accident is under investigation. [CompuServe message from Bonnie Winslow,
RAD/SWRO, 4/15]

92-123 - Indiana Dunes (Indiana) - Drug Activity

While on a patrol of park grounds recently, rangers William Tadych and Mark
Gorman recently found what has been determined to be the wrappings from
numerous kilos of marijuana. Plastic bags with traces of marijuana were
discovered along with brown paper sealed with cellophane tape. The inner
wrappings were comprised of fabric softener sheets sandwiched between layers
of cellophane, possibly to confuse drug dogs. Thirty separate wrappings
were discovered. Local law enforcement agencies were notified to be on the
lookout for increased drug trafficking in the area. [Telefax from Tom
Thompson, RAD/MWRO, 4/14]
