INCIDENTS
92-214 - Denali (Alaska) - Climbing Fatality
T.S., 41, a highly-regarded mountaineer and guide, died in
an accident on Mount McKinley on May 21st. His death was the seventh in
seven days on the peak. T.S., who was employed by Mountain Trip, Inc., was
following two clients as part of a three-person rope team at about 14,400
feet on the South Buttress when they stopped, looking for the route. As
T.S. moved to the front of the line, the snow broke away under him.
T.S.'s clients were able to arrest their descent only when the rope from
T.S. stopped pulling. One client descended into the crevasse twice in
hopes of locating Stump, but was unable to find him. The pair then
continued down the mountain and reported the accident on May 22nd. After
hearing a description of the accident and the crevasse, rangers decided to
make no recovery effort. [cc:Mail message from John Quinley, Public
Affairs, ARO, 5/25]
92-215 - Yosemite (California) - Successful Rescue
Late on the morning of May 20th, C.B., 68, collapsed on the front
porch of the Yosemite Valley visitor center. Visitor center personnel
summoned help, and rangers arrived on scene within three minutes. They
found that C.B. had no pulse and was not breathing; both CPR and advanced
life support measures were initiated. C.B. was defibrillated twice and
transported to the park clinic while his breathing was supported by medics.
After stabilization at the clinic, he was flown by helicopter ambulance to a
Modesto hospital, where he is in the cardiac care unit. [Dan Horner, YOSE,

92-216 - Glen Canyon (Utah/Arizona) - Fatal Boating Accident
During the morning of May 23rd, 12-year-old T.W. of Alpine, Utah, was
fatally injured in a jet ski accident on Lake Powell's Upper Bullfrog Bay.
T.W. was operating a two-person jet ski with a nine-year-old female on board
when they were struck by a similar two-person jet ski operated by M.L.
and J.T.. M.L. was doing hard left and right turns when he
struck the T.W. jet ski. T.W. was pulled from the water and transported by
private boat to Bullfrog, where NPS medics and clinic staff began treatment.
T.W. was then airlifted to Page, Arizona, where she received a whole blood
transfusion before continuing to the Flagstaff Medical Center. T.W. died in
Flagstaff, apparently from internal bleeding. An autopsy will be conducted.
An investigation is being conducted by rangers and local county and state
park officers. Alcohol may have been a contributing factor. No one else
was injured in the accident. [CompuServe message from Larry Clark, CR,
GLCA, 5/24]

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Burial Discovered
Park crews working in the Great Crack area on May 19th discovered human
remains which appear to be over 100 years old and may have been from a
ceremonial burial. It is not uncommon for park staff to find remains that
are over 50 years old which have been placed in caves or cracks as burials.
An NPS archeologist is advising park staff in the investigation currently
underway.
