INCIDENTS

92-255 - Death Valley (California) - Search and Rescue

Around 7:30 p.m. on the evening of June 4th, L.H., 85, a
visitor from Germany, wandered away from her tour group near the park
airport. A search was begun immediately, and she was found at 8:00 a.m. the
following morning at a point about a mile from where she'd last been seen.
Herniersdoff was severely dehydrated but otherwise in good condition, and
was medevaced by a California Highway Patrol helicopter. The temperature at
the time she was reported missing was 102 degrees, with a daily high of 121
degrees. Searchers believe that she would not have survived another day in
these conditions. [Chris Ward, CR, DEVA, via cc:Mail report from Steve
Martin, WRO, 6/9]

92-256 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Drowning

D.M., 27, was swimming in Placer Cove in the Willow Beach area on the
afternoon of June 8th when he experienced difficulties and was brought to
shore by bystanders. They were able to revive him, and responding rangers
found that he had a weak pulse. D.M. was medevaced to a local medical
center, where he was pronounced dead. The subsequent investigation revealed
that alcohol was a factor in the incident. [Aleen Vassar, LAME, via cc:Mail
report from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 6/9]

92-257 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Drug-Related Seizure

A three-month-long investigation into drug-related activities begun by park
personnel and involving the IRS and FBI led to the seizure of a 31-foot,
1991 model Sea Ray boat at Callville Bay Marina and the seizure of over
$800,000 in cash in several depositories. The boat was owned by R.L.L.
of Las Vegas. The park will attempt to obtain the seized boat for
local use under forfeiture statutes. [Mike Blandford, LAME, via cc:Mail
report from Herb Gercke, RAD/WRO, 6/8]

92-258 - Timpanogos Cave (Utah) - MVA with Four Fatalities

At about 12:30 a.m. on May 30th, a two-door Buick with six occupants left
the roadway of State Highway 92 just below the park residential area at a
high rate of speed, became airborne, hit a tree, and came to rest on a bank
of the American Fork River. Two female passengers were able to crawl from
the wreckage to the roadway and flag down passing vehicles. Park personnel
were alerted and responded along with state, county and local police and
local EMS units. P.H., 14, who was six-months pregnant, was
apparently ejected from the passenger side of the vehicle and was found
almost completely submerged in the river about 200 feet downstream from the
vehicle. The driver, M.M., was extricated from the car, and CPR was
begun on him immediately. The remaining victims included L.M., 14,
who had two fractured femurs and head injuries, and J.M., 15, who
was suffering from severe head injuries. All patients were transported to
the American Fork Hospital; M.M. and J.M. were later
airlifted to Salt Lake City. P.H. had been pronounced dead on arrival.
M.M. died later that day, and L.M. and J.M. died on
June 2nd. None of the vehicle occupants had been wearing seatbelts.
Alcohol was determined not to have been a factor. Once the patients were en
route to the hospital, however, county deputies conducted checks on vehicles
backed up in the canyon and issued ten citations for alcohol violations.
