RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Wilson's Creek (Missouri) - Historic Landscape Restoration

The park is in the second year of a three year plan to restore its historic
landscape. Eradication of exotic woody vegetation and restoration of native
plant populations have been key elements in the completion of the project.
Several methodologies have been changed to help protect viewsheds and lessen
the physical impact of the intense labor practices required. The use of a
tree chipper is expected to help lessen impacts that were associated with
the slash and burn methods previously practiced. Some exotic trees which
are on prominent ridges will also be left standing which help reduce the
viewshed. These trees will be replaced in coming years. Hundreds of hours
have been spent on extensive monitoring of the project, and good data has
been compiled which will eventually confirm the project's effectiveness.
Approximately one third of the 1,000 acres targeted for restoration have had
some work done on them. [WICR, 7/23]
