INCIDENTS

92-386 - Chiricahua (Arizona) - Follow-up on Serious Employee Injury

S.E., who was seriously injured when he was thrown from the bed of a
pickup truck while outside the park on July 26th, has been transferred to
the Rehab Institute of Tucson, where he will begin therapy. Although he is
still having difficulty with memory and coordination, his condition is
continuing to improve. It is not known how long he will be hospitalized.
Cards and messages may be sent to him at the Rehab Institute of Tucson, 2650
North Wyatt Drive, Tucson, AZ 85712. [Miki Snyder, CHIR, 8/12]

92-409 - Wright Brothers (North Carolina) - Aircraft Accident

On the morning of August 5th, a single-engined Ciper Lance II piloted by
P.K. of Annandale, Virginia, made a wheels-up landing at the
park's airstrip. Kalantis was uninjured in the accident. He reported that
the planes electrical power had gone out approximately 30 minutes after
taking off from Wright Brothers, and that he'd been unable to get his
landing gear down upon his return. The park and local fire and police
departments responded to the incident. The FAA has been notified, and local
law enforcement authorities are investigating the accident. [Larry Rousch,
CR, CAHA, 8/7]

92-410 - Independence (Pennsylvania) - Presidential Candidate Visit

On August 8th, the park received and granted a request for a permit for
presidential candidate Bill Clinton to speak at Independence Square on
August 10th. Park staff, Secret Service agents, Philadelphia police and the
governor's staff all participated in planning for the event. Governor
Clinton arrived at 1:45 p.m. on the 10th and spoke to about 5,500 people.
After speaking, he spent about 30 minutes talking to the media and shaking
hands with people in the crowd. The event ended at 3:00 p.m. There were no
major incidents. One individual was issued a citation for operating a
public address system without a permit. [Bobby Spears, Acting CR, INDE,
8/11]

92-411 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Marijuana Cultivation

On June 3rd, rangers, acting on a report from a confidential source,
discovered 19 marijuana plants growing in the Garden Ground area, an
outlying section of the park. A remote sensing video camera was set up to
monitor the site and record the time and date of any visit to the plot. The
batteries and video tape were changed weekly over the next several weeks.
When rangers visited the site on July 11th, it appeared that weeds had been
removed from around the plants. The video revealed two persons tending the
plants on July 9th, but the camera had shifted and only the top parts of
their heads were visible. Rangers again visited the site on July 28th; this
time, they found the camera, which had been buried on the ground, lying in
the open and out of the hole in which it had been hidden. The radio antenna
on top of the waterproof container was bent over, and it appeared that
someone had stomped on it. The camera and sensor units, however, were
intact and undamaged. The video tape showed that one person had visited the
site on July 18th and was tending the plants there, but the person was
unidentifiable. Rangers are working with local authorities to identify the
suspect. The investigation is continuing. [Rick Brown, DR, Canyon
District, NERI, 8/12]

92-412 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - MVA with Fatality

A.S., Jr. 31, of Helena, Montana, died from multiple trauma injuries
sustained in a two-vehicle accident just south of the park's north entrance
late on the afternoon of August 10th. Preliminary investigation indicates
that A.S. was traveling south on the park roadway when the motorcycle he
was riding crossed the center line on a blind curve and collided head-on
with a medium-sized recreational vehicle traveling in the opposite
direction. Although rangers and the Mammoth Hot Springs physician responded
immediately, they were unable to save A.S., who was pronounced dead at the
scene. A.S. suffered a broken neck, major chest trauma, and several
fractures. Excessive speed and alcohol were contributing factors. [Pat
Ozment, LES, YELL, 8/11]

92-413 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Burglary

The orientation education program office at the Great Onyx Job Corps Center
was entered through an unsecured service door sometime in the late evening
hours of August 11th or the early hours of the 12th. The office door and a
window were damaged, and several pieces of equipment were removed from the
office and thrown in the hallway along with student profile sheets and
photographs. Damage to the building and contents is estimated to be no more
than $200. [Marcella Gibson, RAD/SERO, 8/12]

92-414 - North Cascades (Washington) - Plane Sinking

On Friday, August 7th, personnel from Chelan Airways left their Cessna 185
float plane tied up overnight at the Riddle Creek dock on Lake Chelan within
the park. During the night, one of the pontoons leaked and the plane
overturned and sank. A barge was able to recover the plane and transport it
to Chelan for repair and salvage. [Dave Spirtes, CR, NOCA, 8/12]

92-415 - Sunset Crater (Arizona) - Suicide

Just after 8:00 a.m. on the morning of August 10th, rangers received a
report of a wounded man lying in a car at the Lava Trail parking area. The
responding ranger found that the victim had no vital signs, and that he had
apparently been dead for several hours. Indications are that the man died
of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two suicide notes and the apparent
suicide weapon were found in the vehicle. The victim's name has been
withheld until notification of next of kin. [Mike Stuckey, DR, SUCR, 8/11]

92-416 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Fatality

S.P., 36, and a female friend were lying beside a campfire near
the North Shore Road around 5:00 a.m. on August 9th when they were struck by
a car that had been parked but apparently started to roll on its own.
S.P. was pushed into the fire and suffered second and third degree burns
over 70% of his body. He was taken to University Hospital in Las Vegas,
where he died early the following morning. His companion suffered only a
sprained ankle. The incident is being investigated by Las Vegas police.
