INCIDENTS

92-559 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Death of Employee

Dave Karraker, 64, the superintendent of Albright Employee Development
Center, died suddenly after a volleyball game with students from a ranger
skills class on Wednesday evening. The cause of death has not yet been
determined. Details will follow in future morning reports. [Flip Hagood,
EDD/WASO, 10/15]

92-560 - Cuyahoga Valley (Ohio) - Arrest of Fugitive

On October 12th, rangers arrested T.J.M at the Stanford
Youth Hostel on a felony warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Police from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, had earlier advised the park that
T.J.M., who was wanted for attempted abduction and sexual assault of a
child, had visited the hostel two or three times a year over the past three
years, that he usually stayed a few days or a week on each visit, that his
last visit had occurred this past June, and that he had been issued a Ohio
driver's license under the name of James A. Hunter, with the hostel listed
as his address. T.J.M., who also uses the aliases T.M., T.MacD.
and T.J.M., has a past felony conviction for sexual
assault and is a suspect in a murder in Iowa. He appeared before a U.S.
magistrate in Akron on October 13th and is to be transferred to the custody
of the county sheriff for extradition to Milwaukee. [Brain McHugh, CR,
CUVA, 10/14]

92-561 - Gauley River (West Virginia) - SAR; Drowning

At about 10:45 a.m. on October 10th, rangers received a report of a possible
drowning from a commercial rafting company on the Gauley River, and began a
search for A.F.D., 46, of Burke, Virginia, who had fallen out of
a raft above Shipwreck Rock rapid. Others in the raft, including her
husband, saw her hit the rock, then go under. The park made arrangements
with the Corps of Engineers to gradually lower the water flow from the
Summersville Dam to help the recovery effort, while allowing all other
boaters time and water to safely complete their river trips. The river
level was systematically reduced throughout the afternoon to 150 cfs to
permit rangers and outfitters to locate A.F.D. under or around the undercut
rock, but the search was eventually called off because of darkness. The
water level was again reduced late the next morning, and rangers, commercial
boaters, a diver and a canine rescue team resumed the search. A.F.D.'s body
was located under the rock by the diver at 4:30 p.m. and was brought to
shore. The Gauley River is a Class V+ river with dangerous undercut rocks,
extreme currents, limited access, and steep rocky terrain. These conditions
made this rescue dangerous and strenuous for all personnel involved.

92-562 - North Cascades (Washington) - Fatality; Falling Rock

W.R., 69, of Elma, Washington, was killed instantly on October 13th
when a falling rock crushed his car as he was driving east along Highway 20
through the park. D.W., 77, a passenger in the car, suffered cuts
and bruises. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and
released. Rangers assisted state troopers in the investigation. [Mark
Forbes, RAD/PNRO, 10/15]

92-563 - Harpers Ferry (West Virginia) - Capture of Homicide Suspect

On October 9th, a Brunswick, Maryland, police officer attempted to stop a
vehicle bearing only a rear tag which was being driven by a man who appeared
to be wearing a ski mask. It was soon determined that the vehicle was
stolen, and a chase ensured that ended in the park when the operator
abandoned his vehicle just beyond the railroad station house. The town's
police chief and ranger Bill Scholfield were among the first to arrive on
scene. Gunshots were exchanged between the vehicle's driver and other
officers (Scholfield did not fire), but no one was hit. Other officers soon
arrived and negotiations with the man were begun. One aspect of these
negotiations involved putting the man in contact with his mother, which was
done through park dispatch. That contact significantly aided the
negotiation process; he finally relinquished his weapon and was taken into
custody. Ballistics test conducted on the gun indicated that it had been
involved in four homicides over the past 12 months. Other information
revealed that the man was also a probable suspect in several bank robberies
which occurred in nearby jurisdictions. [Capt. Marvin Ellison, RAD/NCRO,
10/15]

92-564 - Natchez Trace (Mississippi/Alabama/Tennessee) - Probable Suicide

H.J., 53, of Jackson, Mississippi, was found dead of an apparent
gunshot wound in a parkway pullout on October 13th. H.J. had last been
seen alive just before 1 p.m. At that time, he was sitting against a tree
and waved to the patrol ranger in a friendly manner. When the ranger
returned to the pullout a half hour later, he found H.J.'s body in the
nearby woods. H.J. had a bullet wound in his chest and a rifle was lying
beside him. The county sheriff's office is leading the investigation.
Autopsy results are pending. [Gordon Wissinger, CR, NATR, 10/14]
