INCIDENTS

92-562 - War in the Pacific (Guam) - Typhoon Brian

The eye of Typhoon Brian passed directly over the Agat and Mount Alifan
Units of the park late on the morning of October 21st. Fortunately, the
storm lacked the strength of Typhoon Omar, which devastated the island in
August. Maximum sustained winds had been predicted for up to 125 mph, but
actual measurements put them at 85 mph, with gusts to 120 mph. Average
rainfall estimates for the 24-hour period during which the storm passed over
the island have been placed at about ten inches. The park was closed at 6
p.m. on October 19th and reopened at 7 a.m. on October 22nd. [Bryan Harry,
Director, Pacific Area, 10/22]

92-571 - Chattahoochee (Georgia) - Assist on Arrest of Assailant

During a routine traffic stop on October 21st, a Cobb County officer was
injured when she was deliberately struck by the suspect's vehicle and pinned
between that vehicle and her cruiser. The officer, whose legs were crushed,
was able to shoot one of her assailants, but a second fled into the nearby
Paces Mill area of the park. Ranger Kimberly Kirk and Cobb County officers
were subsequently able to locate and apprehend the man. [Ken Garvin, CR,
CHAT, 10/21]

92-572 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Human Remains Found

On October 16th, the park received a report that occupants of a houseboat
had found a human skeleton near Nellis Cove on Lake Mohave. Rangers and Las
Vegas homicide investigators eventually contacted the parties and located
the remains. Although no positive identification of the victim has yet been
made, the remains are believed to be those of A.E.I., who has
been missing since June 10, 1990. The investigation is continuing. [Scott
Olson, LAME, 10/16]

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Petrified Forest (Arizona) - Pronghorn Roundup

On October 14th and 15th, Arizona Game and Fish, in cooperation with the
CPSU at Northern Arizona University and park staff, employed a helicopter to
net ten female pronghorns within Petrified Forest and another ten outside
the park's boundaries. By tracking the radio-collared animals, the state
and park hope to learn more about their movements, habitats and behavior.
