INCIDENTS
92-582 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Lava Flow
Early on the morning of October 28th, maintenance employees reported that a
lava flow from the Puu O'o vent had come over the escarpment above Kamoamoa.
Although the flow had been monitored throughout the week, observers had
expected it to pool on the flat land above the escarpment and not proceed
any further. An overflight revealed extensive surface activity, with two
strong flows moving down the cliff and into coastal grass lands. The park
was planning on direct suppression of wildfire occurring along the flow on
Wednesday and black line operations on Thursday to protect the remaining
coastal shrub forest to the east. No threats to facilities are anticipated.
Visitors are attempting to hike into the flow area from numerous points
along the coastal road and rangers have not been able to either monitor or
control them. The flow should provide good viewing for the public in the
evening hours. [Jim Martin, CR, HAVO, 10/29]
92-583 - Big South Fork (Tennessee) - Search and Rescue
A nearby sheriff's office advised rangers of an overdue hiking party in the
park on the night of October 26th. Seven people were reportedly in the
group, including a 15-month-old baby and an elderly woman with a history of
heart problems. A ranger found their vehicle, and a hasty team began
searching for them. After several hours, they found the party in a rock
shelter. M.W., 65, was experiencing chest pains and having
difficulty breathing. The park's rescue team was brought in and evacuated
all parties in a night-long effort. M.W. and the baby were taken to a
hospital for observation. [John Cannon, CR, BISO, 10/29]
92-584 - Buffalo (Arkansas) - Special Event
A regional Rainbow gathering was held on Forest Service land adjacent to the
park's lower wilderness area between October 16th and 20th. About 100
people participated. On the 24th, approximately 30 of them hiked into the
wilderness area, where the 1975 national Rainbow gathering was held. Since
the 24th was the opening day of muzzleloader deer season and the area was
experiencing dry fire conditions, rangers and Forest Service law enforcement
personnel monitored the group's activities and made contacts with deer
hunters and other park visitors. No incidents of conflicts between the
group and hunters occurred. [RAD/SWRO, 10/29]
92-585 - President's Park (District of Columbia) - Homicide
Just after 2 a.m. on October 26th, uniformed Secret Service officers heard
several gunshots from their guard booth near the Old Executive Office
Building and found a male suffering from several gunshot wounds seated in a
car parked along the street. A dark-colored sedan was seen leaving the area
at a high rate of speed. Park Police officers responded along wih city
detectives and an ambulance. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Park Police and city detectives are investigating. [RAD/NCRO, 10/27]
