INCIDENTS
91-602 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Follow-up on Weapons Arrest
On November 3, 1991, members of the MAR SET team assigned to the park to
enforce area closures due to extreme fire danger arrested J.S.B., 31,
of Raleigh, North Carolina, on weapons and drug possession charges. During
a routine contact in a closed area, team members observed knives, ammunition
and a marijuana pipe in plain view in J.S.B.'s vehicle. "Kiwi", the drug dog
purchased by the NPS for the Fayette County drug task force, was brought to
the scene and assisted in a search of the vehicle. Along with a small
amount of marijuana, rangers found three fully-loaded weapons in J.S.B.'s
vehicle - a 9 mm Luger machine pistol, a Model 60 Marlin rifle, and a 16-inch
sawed-off shotgun. On October 30th, J.S.B., who had already pleaded
guilty to one count of misdemeanor of a controlled substance, entered a
guilty plea to one count of possession of a sawed-off shotgun (26 USC
5861D). Sentencing is scheduled for January 6th. [Christopher Schrader,

92-608 - War in the Pacific (Guam) - Typhoon Hunt
At 1 a.m. yesterday morning, Typhoon Condition 1 was declared for the island
due to the approach of Typhoon Hunt, and the park was accordingly closed.
At the time of the report (6 a.m. yesterday), the typhoon was located about
150 miles east-southeast of Guam and was moving in a westerly direction at
17 mph. It had sustained winds of about 70 mph, with gusts around 90 mph.
The storm was expected to pass within 40 miles of the island. All park
personnel are on administrative leave until the typhoon passes.

92-609 - Yosemite (California) - Drug Arrest
On November 15th, park investigators developed a lead on the location of a
methamphetamine distribution operation that had been set up in Yosemite
Lodge. A search warrant was secured on information provided by a
confidential informant, and surveillance of the premises was begun. The
suspected dealer was identified as D.C., a former manager of
Yosemite Park and Curry Company's Mountain Room Bar, who is alleged to be
the main supplier for methamphetamine dealers in Yosemite. D.C. was
detained as he attempted to leave the cabin he had rented. A search of the
cabin led to the discovery of just over 42 grams of methamphetamine (valued
at $4,000), all of it packaged for sale. Investigators seized various items
of paraphernalia used in the distribution of methamphetamine, a large
quantity of cash, and assorted documents containing names and phone numbers
of suspected dealers. D.C. was arrested and is currently being held on
two felony counts - one for possession of narcotics for sale, the other for
possession of hypodermic syringes - and one misdemeanor count of being under
the influence of a controlled substance. [W. Jeffrey Sullivan, LEO, YOSE,

92-610 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Search and Rescue
A search was begun on the night of November 14th for six Boy Scouts and a
Scout leader who failed to return to their campsite at Maple Springs group
campground following a hike in the park. An incident command team was
established, and hasty searches were conducted during the night while
additional resources were being mobilized. At dawn on the following
morning, 21 park searchers and a state police canine unit began a search of
for the group. Just before 7 a.m., rangers found them hiking out on
Turnhole Bend trail. The group had attempted to return to their base camp
in the darkness and had lost the trail. They were unable to start a fire,
and had no maps, flashlights, food, water or shelter. During the night, the
temperature had dropped to 19 degrees. Nonetheless, all were in good
condition. [RAD/SERO, 11/16]
