INCIDENTS

92-631 - Bighorn Canyon (Wyoming) - Employee Death

A 27-year-old park maintenance employee (name not provided) was playing
basketball in the government camp school gymnasium with other community
members on the evening of December 1st when he collapsed on the gym floor
and went into convulsions. Companions found he did not have a pulse, and
CPR was begun by two Bureau of Reclamation employees in the group. The
district ambulance was on another call about two blocks from the gym at the
time and was rerouted to the scene. Park EMT's continued CPR; they also
summoned an ambulance from Hardin (45 miles away) and an air ambulance from
Billings. When the units arrived, IV's were started and the victim was
defibrillated. Efforts to revive him proved fruitless, however, and he was
pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that he
died of congenital heart disease and could not have been successfully
defibrillated. Investigators learned that he had been complaining of chest
pain at home, but that he continued to come to work and had not displayed
any indication of physical problems. The victim served as the district
lifeguard last summer and had passed the standard physical examination prior
to his employment. [Chris Johnson, BICA, 12/3]

92-632 - Knife River Indian Villages (North Dakota) - Employee Injury

Ranger Ken Woody was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident while
operating a government vehicle on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 2nd.
Woody, who was returning from a recruiting assignment, was driving near
Carrington, North Dakota, when a vehicle pulled in front of him. Woody's
vehicle struck the rear of the other vehicle, then went into a ditch
adjacent to the roadway. Woody sustained serious neck injuries and was
admitted to a hospital in Bismarck. The occupants of the other vehicle were
not injured. Woody may be released from the hospital tomorrow, but is
expected to be out of work for at least a month. [Bruce Kaye, Acting
Superintendent, KNRI, 12/3]

92-633 - Big South Fork (Tennessee) - Poaching

On November 26th, ranger Tony Zyvoloski was watching an area along an
isolated road where deer frequently graze when a pickup truck approached and
stopped about 75 yards from his location. The truck then backed-up a short
distance, a rifle barrel came out of the driver's side window, and a shot
was fired into the woods. Zyvoloski was able to approach the vehicle under
cover before the occupant could exit or drive off. T.D., 24, the
truck's sole occupant, was arrested on illegal hunting charges. [John
Cannon, CR, BISO, 12/3]
