INCIDENTS

92-632 - Knife River (North Dakota) - Follow-up on Employee Injury

Ranger Ken Woody remains hospitalized with fractures of the C-2 and C-3 neck
vertebrae following the motor vehicle accident he was involved in on
December 2nd. He will be required to wear a halo which provides neck
support for approximately the next three months. Attending physicians are
also considering corrective treatment for skin grafts which were damaged in
the accident. Woody was burned last August, and the skin grafts were
required to treat that injury. The park's staff is providing assistance to
Woody's wife and the couple's three young children. Cards and notes of
support can be sent to Ken at the hospital: Room 4422, St. Alexis Hospital,
P.O. Box 5510, 900 E. Broadway, Bismarck, ND 58501. [Brian Reilly,
RAD/RMRO, and Betty Boyko, KNRI, 12/4]

92-634 - Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania (Virginia) - MVA; Serious Injuries

At about 4:30 p.m. on December 2nd, G.A.D. lost control of her
vehicle while westbound on McLaws Drive in Chancellorsville, then ran off
the road, struck a tree and flipped over. She and her two children, ages
six and eight, were taken to a local hospital, where the children were
treated and released. Donald was medivaced to Washington Hospital Center,
where she is being treated for a broken neck. Investigators believe that
the accident was caused by a combination of speed and defective equipment.
The investigation continues. [Mike Johnson, CR, FRSP, 12/4]

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Bison Management

An interim bison management plan has been put in place for the coming winter
which provides for cooperative efforts with the U.S. Forest Service and the
State of Montana's Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Department of
Livestock. The plan includes provisions for combined management actions in
which park personnel will take an active bison management role outside the
park's boundaries at the state's request and will work under the direction
and overall supervision of the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The
park will respond to such requests when exiting bison pose a problem, such
as a threat to private property, a threat to human safety, or the potential
for spreading brucellosis infection to domestic cattle. Montana Indian
tribes will be asked to help process the carcasses of animals which have
been shot. Meat processed by the tribes will be distributed on the
reservations, and the heads and hides will be used for cultural purposes.
Blood and tissue samples will continue to be taken from certain killed
animals to augment the data base from last year. Only with improved
understanding and knowledge gained through research of the
bison-brucellosis-cattle relationship can as good regional bison management plan
be formulated. A long-range plan, which will include an EIS, is currently
being prepared in cooperation with the State of Montana, the U.S. Animal and
Plant Health Inspection Service, and the Forest Service. The draft EIS is
scheduled to be completed next spring. [Marsha Karle, PIO, YELL]
