INCIDENTS
92-154 - Denali (Alaska) - Follow-up on Bear Poaching Incident
On December 11th, D.T., 50, of Wasilla, was sentenced in U.S.
District Court for convictions stemming from the illegal killing of a bear
in the park last April. D.T. was ordered to pay a $3,600 fine, placed
on probation for three years, forfeited his sport hunting privileges for
three years, and forfeited the bear's hide and skull to the park. The money
will go to the Denali Resource Protection and Education Fund, which is used
to assist in wildlife enforcement and education projects. D.T. admitted
that he killed the grizzly bear, but asserted that he had committed no crime
because the 1973 USGS map he used did not show the park boundary, which was
established in 1980. The case was important because it reinforced the
principle that it is a hunter's responsibility to know where he is hunting.

92-632 - Knife River (North Dakota) - Follow-up on Employee Injury
Ranger Ken Woody was released from St. Alexis Hospital on December 9th. He
is currently recuperating at home and is expected to return to work in about
a month. Ken and his family extend their appreciation for all the cards and
support they received from around the Service. [Brian Reilly, RLES,
RAD/RMRO, 12/18]
92-654 - Kenai Fjords (Alaska) - Bear Poaching
L.B., 24, of Anchorage, has forfeited the hide of a black bear that
was illegally killed in Harris Bay on June 10th. L.B. and his father
encountered the bear while fishing in the park. The bear was attracted to a
fish one of them had unwisely left on the beach. Following a short
investigation and the seizure of the hide from an Anchorage taxidermy shop,
L.B. confessed to killing the bear. L.B. agreed to settle the matter by
forfeiting the tanned hide and skull in lieu of a civil penalty under the
Lacey Act. The hide and skull will be used for environmental education
programs in the park. [John Quinley, PIO, ARO, 12/17]
92-655 - Blue Ridge Parkway (North Carolina/Virginia) - Assault on Officer
Just after 3 a.m. on October 16th, K.S., an Ashe County deputy
sheriff, was travelling north on the parkway when he noticed a beam of light
sweeping across a pasture at Alder Gap, then saw a pickup pull out from the
left side grassy shoulder and head northbound at a high rate of speed.
K.S. activated his blue lights and began pursuit. As K.S. neared
the truck, he saw the passenger lean out of the window with a rifle and aim
it at his patrol vehicle. Although K.S. didn't hear the weapon's
report, he saw a flash and immediately stopped his car. After notifying his
dispatcher, K.S. resumed pursuit, caught up with the pickup shortly
thereafter, and followed from a safer distance. The passenger was still
hanging out of the window and fired three quick shots at K.S.'s car,
hitting it in the front bumper and the driver's side mirror. K.S.
immediately stopped. He continued after a few minutes, but was unable to
find the truck again. Meanwhile, ten patrol units from five agencies
responded to provide backup and help find the truck. The parkway, state
roads and rural unpaved roads were checked carefully, but no sign of the
vehicle was found. A joint investigation was begun into the incident.
