INCIDENTS

92-582 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Follow-up on Lava Flow

All lava flow activity stopped completely in the morning hours of January
3rd. No lava could be seen in the Puu O'o vent or in any of the major lava
tube systems leading from the vent to the coastal entry. The summit of
Kilauea began inflating during the day, however, and flows resumed late in
the afternoon in both the tubes and on the surface. On January 5th, lava
suddenly broke out of the tube systems in the area of the old Kamoamoa
campground, covering the remaining portions of the parking lot for the
picnic area and the old stone restroom. As the flow moved into unburnt
fuels, fire activity resumed at several locations. At the time of the
report, that activity was restricted to flow fronts and was being confined
within black lines or trails. [Jim Martin, CR, HAVO, 1/6]

92-674 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Sexual Assault

On August 11th, the parents of a ten-year old female contacted rangers and
reported that she had been sexually assaulted by G.H., a resident
of the employee housing area where they all lived. Rangers Pat Donohue and
Larry Hanneman responded; when they arrived, G.H. attempted to walk
rapidly from the area but was apprehended by Hanneman. Investigation
confirmed the allegations, and G.H. was arrested and charged with sexual
assault and lewdness with a minor. On September 3rd, G.H. pled guilty to
lewdness with a minor in a plea bargain agreement with the county district
attorney. The sexual assault charge was dismissed. On November 3rd,
G.H. was sentenced to five years in the state prison. [Susan Warner,
LAME, 1/7]

93-6 - Big Bend (Texas) - Trespass Livestock; Smuggling Interdiction

Three rangers, two Border Patrol agents and a Department of Agriculture
agent infiltrated the San Vicente Crossing area on foot at 1 a.m. on January
6th and captured trespass horses. Following the last two successful
roundups, residents of the Mexican town of San Vicente said that they would
hobble their horses in the park close to the river so they could be
retrieved before rangers could round them up. An unexpected bonus was
realized when the team spotted and stopped three vehicles at the crossing at
3 a.m. and found that the drivers were attempting to illegally transport
commercial goods through the park and into Mexico. The haulers were trying
to bypass Mexican customs. [RAD/SWRO, 1/7]

93-7 - Petrified Forest (Arizona) - Storm Impacts

The park received more than two-and-a-half inches of rain on January 7th and
was buffeted by winds in excess of 65 mph. At the time of the report,
electrical power had been lost throughout most of the park and telephones
were temporarily out. All roads were still open, but closures were possible
if more rain fell. [Gary Cummins, Superintendent, PEFO, 1/8]

93-8 - Timpanogos Cave (Utah) - Storm Closure

The same storm that struck Petrified Forest caused the closure of Timpanogos
Cave on January 8th. Several snow slides had fallen and avalanche dangers
remained high, so both American Fork and Provo Canyons were closed. Some
power outages were also reported in the park. [Carolyn Barker, AO, TICA,
1/8]
