INCIDENTS
93-1 - Sequoia/Kings Canyon (California) - Follow-up on Structural Fire
Grant Grove Market, the structure which burned to the ground on January 6th,
contained a grocery store and cross country ski rental shop, both of which
were operated by Guest Services, Inc. The fire department was called out at
3:15 a.m. by a 911 call from a local resident who reported that the market
was on fire. When the brigade arrived, the building was fully involved, and
the upper parts of all four walls and the entire roof had already burned and
collapsed. The building and its contents were a total loss. No other
buildings were involved. There were no detection or sprinkler systems in
the building, and the fire was discovered only when containers in the market
started exploding with sufficient force to awaken nearby residents. The
building, which was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who also designed
the Ahwahnee Hotel and many other NPS buildings, was under consideration for
nomination to the National Historic Register. The building was the park's
original lodge when it opened in the late 1920's and also served as a
recreation center before becoming the market. Losses are estimated at
$200,000. Rangers and Tulare County fire investigators are still
investigating the cause of the blaze. [Mike Warren, SEKI, 1/11]
93-9 - National Capital Parks (D.C.) - Assault on Officer
On the afternoon of January 8th, members of the Park Police narcotics and
vice unit attempted to approach a van which was believed to contain suspects
wanted for several violations. As they closed on the vehicle, the operator
attempted to run down one of the officers. The officer fired his weapon in
the direction of the van, and one of the rounds struck the driver. The
driver was able to continue, however, and was pursued by several unmarked
Park Police cruisers. The van was finally stopped and the driver was
apprehended and taken to a local hospital. He was charged with assault on a
police officer while armed. A second suspect was later apprehended by other
officers from the unit and charged with felony drug violations. [Lt. Robert
Kass, USPP, 1/10]
93-10 - Cape Hatteras (North Carolina) - SAR; Probable Fatality
M.F. and B.G., both of Virginia Beach, were surfing about a
mile south of Cape Hatteras lighthouse on January 10th. M.F. came to
shore, but B.G. was caught by a current and carried south. M.F.
attempted to follow and find him; when his search proved unsuccessful,
M.F. reported him missing. The park, Coast Guard and local rescue squad
began search operations, but have yet to find him. The Coast Guard reported
ten-foot seas and 48 degree water temperatures in the search area. The
search is continuing. [Hugo Desch, DR, CAHA, 1/11]
93-11 - Mesa Verde (Colorado) - Storm Closure
The park was closed on January 8th due to power outages and 18 inches of new
snow. No further details are available. [Richard Kohen, RAD/RMRO, 1/8]
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Alaska Region - Wolf Management
This year's proposed aerial shooting of more than 300 wolves has been
canceled by Governor Wally Hickel, but a "Wolf Summit" is still scheduled
for Fairbanks this month. The governor's action took place at a time when
much public attention has been placed on the state's proposed wolf hunt. In
an apparent retaliation to a tourism boycott of Alaska organized by
opponents of the planned wolf reduction, a paid ad recently appeared in
Fairbanks and Anchorage papers which took a slightly different position.
The ad features a picture of a sinister-looking male with a stocking cap
over his face, one hand on the neck of a scruffy wolf, and the other hand
holding a cocked revolver with the barrel in the wolf's mouth. The caption,
which is in capitals and bold face, says: "VISIT ALASKA THIS SUMMER OR THE
WOLF BITES IT." Above the ad appears an injunction to clip it out and send
it to a prospective visitor. [Al Lovaas, Chief, DNR/ARO, 1/8]
