INCIDENTS
92-675 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Car Clouting Convictions
On January 20th, B.C. and P.J. were each sentenced to ten
months confinement and three years supervised probation after pleading
guilty to three felony thefts from vehicles in the park over the past year.
Following a series of thefts from vehicles in the Thurston Lava Tube,
rangers Jeff Judd and Gail Minami staked out the area and subsequently
videotaped B.C. and P.J. breaking into vehicles. The pair will also be
required to submit to drug testing and reimburse visitors whose vehicle
windows were broken during the thefts. [Jim Martin, CR, HAVO, 1/22]
93-30 - Prince William Forest (Virginia) - Attempted Poaching; Arrests Made
Rangers set out a deer decoy along a rural road that bordered the park on
the evening of December 18th as part of an effort to demonstrate that the
park was taking aggressive measures to curtail poaching of wildlife in the
park. The rangers then staked out the area. Shortly after they took their
positions, a sport pickup passed by the decoy, turned and passed it again,
then turned a third time and stopped. The driver of the truck stepped out
onto the road and shot the decoy with a slug from a 12 gauge shotgun.
Realizing that he had shot a decoy, the driver quickly sped away with the
rangers in pursuit. The truck was eventually stopped, and the driver was
arrested and charged on numerous state and federal counts. The park will
seek restitution for the decoy and forfeiture of the firearm when the case
comes to trial. [Ken Kelley, RAD/NCRO, 1/22]
93-31 - Ozark (Missouri) - Structural Fire
Sometime between 6 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday, January 20th, a cabin
owned by Don McIntire and located on a scenic easement on the Upper Current
River was totally destroyed by fire. Damage is estimated to be in excess of
$40,000. Rangers and the state fire marshall's office investigated the
incident and found that McIntire had left a fire in his wood burning cook
stove when he left the cabin. There is no reason to suspect arson and no
evidence of arson could be found. [Tim Blank, CR, OZAR, 1/22]
93-32 - Martin Luther King, Jr. (Georgia) - Special Event
Martin Luther King Week activities in the park ended on Monday, January
18th, with a march and rally attended by an estimated 10,000 people. Jean-
Bertrand Aristide, exiled president of Haiti, was the principal speaker at a
service of rededication on January 12th, and the annual parade on Saturday
was attended by an estimated 75,000 spectators. Rangers from Chattahoochee
and Kennesaw Mountain assisted park staff during these events. Only one
arrest (disorderly conduct) was made; one criminal incident (larceny from an
auto) was also recorded. [Steve Alscher, RLES, RAD/SERO, 1/22]
93-33 - Fossil Butte (Wyoming) - Storm Impacts: Closure
The park was closed on Friday, January 22nd, due to high winds, heavy snows,
and a power outage. All park employees were given administrative leave.
The superintendent hoped to reopen the area during the weekend. [Dave
McGinnis, Superintendent, FOBU, 1/22]
