INCIDENTS

93-34 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Helicopter Crash with Fatalities

A tourist helicopter from Kainoa Aviation in Hilo crashed in the Pacific
Ocean yesterday while flying near the point where the volcano's lava flow
enters the sea in the Kalapana area. There were five people on board; the
pilot survived, but three of his passengers died and the fourth is missing.
The crash occurred just outside of park boundaries, but rangers have been
actively involved in search and rescue operations. [Jim Martin, CR, HAVO,
1/25]

93-35 - Padre Island (Texas) - Storm Impacts: Structural Damage

The park was struck by gale force winds as a weather front moved through the
area on Sunday, January 24th. The roof on a large equipment and storage
garage at the ranger station was severely damaged by the winds. Estimates
indicate that repairs will cost approximately $5,000. No injuries were
reported. [Tom McDaniel, PAIS, 1/25]

93-36 - Florissant Fossil Beds (Colorado) - Trapping and Weapons Violations

Local resident J.B. was recently found in possession of several
loaded weapons and traps while within park boundaries. At the time of
contact, J.B. had a loaded 12 gauge shotgun and a loaded .22 rifle on the
front seat of his truck and had a loaded .22 Ruger concealed under his coat.
During the interview following his arrest, J.B. admitted to trapping in
the park. He was subsequently charged with several weapon and wildlife
protection violations. [Brian Lakes, FLFO, 1/21]

93-37 - Cowpens (South Carolina) - Special Event

The 212th anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens drew record crowds over the
weekend of January 16th and 17th. Over 5,000 spectators watched living
