INCIDENTS
93-20 - Lassen Volcanic (California) - Follow-up on Storm Impacts
The winter storms which dropped heavy rain and snow on the park over the
past few weeks have finally abated. Eight buildings have received
structural damage to date. One storage building and an enclosed porch
addition totally collapsed, eaves broke on two building, and rafters split
or broke on four other buildings. A structural engineer from Denver Service
Center has inspected the buildings and will be preparing a structural
analysis. Repair estimates have not yet been completed. [Herb Gercke,
RAD/WRO, 1/29]
93-40 - Canyon de Chelly (Arizona) - Burglary
On the morning of January 27th, park employees discovered that the visitor
center had been illegally entered through the skylight sometime during the
previous evening and that thieves had taken a number of items, including
radios, a television, a camcorder, three cameras, an Ansel Adams photograph,
a tape recorder and cassettes, binoculars, seven Navajo rugs, two baskets,
and a painting. Exhibit cases containing valuable pots and artifacts were
not disturbed. While rangers were conducting an investigation of the crime
scene with Navajo police, the thieves began broadcasting on the stolen park
radios. The rangers followed their broadcasts and eventually located the
suspects; tribal officers arrested a juvenile male, an adult male and an
adult female. A fourth suspect is still at large. The vehicle which the
suspects were driving was searched and several of the stolen items were
found. The vehicle was also confiscated. The remaining items, except for
one camera, were recovered by tribal police the following day. Federal
charges against the trio of thieves are pending. The swift and successful
resolution of the case has been attributed to cooperative efforts between
rangers and Navajo police. [Doug Roe, CR, CACH, 1/29]
