INCIDENTS
91-363 - Jefferson National Expansion (Missouri) - Follow-up on Drug Arrest
Following a routine stop of a vehicle for possession of open containers of
alcohol on August 1, 1991, rangers arrested J.P.G. and an
accomplice on charges of possession of just under two pounds of marijuana
packaged for sale and numerous alcohol and vehicle violations. Rangers also
found over $400 in cash and nine grams of a "look-alike" substance that the
men apparently intended to sell as methamphetamine. J.P.G., a felony
fugitive from the St. Louis County police, was later remanded to the custody
of the county police department on active warrants to await state charges
while the assistant U.S. attorney and park staff prepared federal charges.
J.P.G. was subsequently released from custody on a court-directed order to
appear for trial and was given bond on his own recognizance with
restrictions. J.P.G., however, failed to appear in either county or
federal court, and investigation revealed that he had fled the state. Last
November, a police officer in Corvallis, Oregon, stopped J.P.G. for driving
on expired tags and other vehicle violations and soon discovered the
outstanding warrants against him. J.P.G. pled guilty to possession of a
controlled substance (21 USC 844A) in federal court in Eugene and received a
30 day sentence and a suspended fine. Late in December, J.P.G. was
extradited to Missouri, where he is currently confined. [John Weddle, CI,

93-45 - Guilford Courthouse (South Carolina) - Felony Arrest
On the morning of Wednesday, January 27th, chief ranger Chuck Taylor
confronted and disarmed 27-year-old B.K., who moments before had
fired three shots from his 12 gauge shotgun at construction workers just
outside the park. One of the workers was hit in his arm by a rifled slug.
Greenville police have charged B.K. with three counts of assault with a
deadly weapon (gun) with intent to kill. [Steve Alscher, LES, RAD/SERO,
2/2]
93-46 - North Cascades (Washington) - Contract Employee Fatality
L.E., 52, of Seattle, Washington, was taking the monthly snow survey
at the Beaver Creek Trail course in a remote part of the park on January
29th when he suffered a heart attack. His partner began CPR, and L.E. was
evacuated to a nearby town via the contract helicopter which was being used
for the survey. Paramedics met the helicopter when it arrived, but were
unable to revive L.E.. L.E. was a snow surveyor under contract to Seattle
City Light Company. He had a recent history of heart problems. [David
Spirtes, CR, NOCA, 2/2]
