INCIDENTS
93-47 - Lassen Volcanic (California) - Serious EMS Incidents
On January 24th, S.L., 19, of Magalia, California, was seriously
injured in a snowmobiling accident in the park's ski area. Responding
rangers learned that S.L. had injured his back and that he was numb from
the waist down; there was also a deformity in his left hip and his left leg
appeared to be shortened. As the ground ambulance and life flight
helicopter arrived to evacuate him, another report came in stating that a
juvenile Boy Scout had injured his back while tubing and was located at the
bottom of a deep and precipitous ravine. Fortunately, a winter rescue
course was being conducted in the area involving rangers and representatives
from other agencies, thereby providing the manpower to extricate the Scout
from the ravine and to control the crowd of observers from the helicopter.
Two days before these incidents occurred, park medics responded to an
incident at Mineral Lodge in which a three-year-old girl was suffering
seizures. The medics determined that she had been in status epilepticus
(continuous seizure) for about 20 minutes, and quickly started an IV and
administered Valium to the little girl. By the time the ambulance and
helicopter arrived, the little girl was relaxing and starting to respond to
her mother. Follow-up revealed that she is now doing fine, but that the
cause for the seizure has not yet been determined. [Dutch Ackart and Sandi
