INCIDENTS

93-57 - San Francisco Maritime (California) - Employee Death

Jay Michel DeBaun, an interpretive ranger at San Francisco Maritime, passed
away on the morning of February 8th from AIDS-related complications at a
convalescent hospital in San Francisco. He was 37 years old. [SAFR, 2/9]

93-58 - Joshua Tree (California) - Rescue

Climbers J.J. and D.G. were on a difficult route called
Bridge of Sighs on Ghost Town Wall in Indian Cove on February 5th when
D.G., who was leading, lost his hold and fell. J.J. was belaying
and braced to hold the fall, but all of D.G.'s protection had pulled
out, causing him to fall on J.J.'s leg. J.J. suffered an open
fracture to his lower leg; D.G.'s head was lacerated. D.G. was
able to scramble back to the road, where he contacted Marines from the
Corps' Mountain Warfare Division, who were involved in a rock climbing
exercise in the area. Rangers and Marines initiated rescue efforts shortly
thereafter. Because of the rugged terrain, a California Highway Patrol
(CHP) helicopter was called in to assist. A 200-foot tyrolean traverse was
set up to move J.J. to a location where the helicopter could effect a
one-skid hover and pick him up. According to the park, the superior flying
by the CHP crew and the joint effort by Marines and rangers were critical in
the successful completion of a very technical and difficult rescue. [Paul
Henry, CR, JOTR, 2/9]

93-59 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Volcanic Activity

Just after midnight on February 8th, a series of seismic events began in the
park, including rapid deflation of the summit area of Kilauea and hundreds
of tremors and small earthquakes in the Makaopuhi Crater area east of the
Chain of Craters Road and west of the current eruption at the Puu O'o vent.
The flows into the ocean at Kamoamoa stopped, and it appears that Puu O'o
and the tubes leading to the ocean have drained. Significant coastal beach
collapse occurred in the early morning hours after lava drained out from
under it. Activity at Makaopuhi continued throughout the day and the summit
area continued to deflate. U.S. Geologic Service personnel feel that a new
outbreak in the Makaopuhi area is possible at any time. The coastal area,
Chain of Craters Road and Hilina Pali road have been closed so that no
visitors will be entrapped in the area if the outbreak occurs. The
situation is being closely monitored. [Jim Martin, CR, HAVO, 2/9]

93-60 - Golden Gate (California) - Rescue

On February 5th, rangers, Park Police officers and Coast Guard personnel
rescued three members of a four-person crew who had been on a large sail
boat which capsized in the heavy surf between Point Diablo and Point Bonita
and came aground at Black Sand Beach. The three survivors were evacuated by
helicopter while a search for the fourth crew member continued. On February
6th, a body washed ashore on Black Sand Beach along with flotsam from the
totally destroyed boat. The victim was tentatively identified as that of
the missing crew member. The body was removed by rangers and turned over to
the county coroner's office. No names have yet been released. [Herb
Gercke, RAD/WRO, 2/9]
