INCIDENTS

92-471 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Follow-up on Assault on Ranger

On January 29th, J.M.B. of Carpinteria, California, pled guilty in
U.S. district court in Louisville to one count of assaulting federal
officers [18 USC 111(a)(1)]. J.M.B., 29, was arrested by rangers on August
28, 1992 for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. Rangers had to use
OC-10 to subdue him after he violently resisted arrest, kicking a window out
of a patrol car and assaulting rangers David Alexander and James Blanton.
J.M.B. was sentenced to two months imprisonment, ordered to pay $554 in fines
and restitution, and will be placed on a year's supervised probation when he
is released from prison. [Brad McDougal, MACA, 2/25]

92-528 - Sequoia/Kings Canyon (California) - Follow-up on Fatal MVA

On September 29, 1992, a group of intoxicated concession employees were
returning to their quarters in Giant Forest when the vehicle left the road
and crashed into a tree. All passengers were injured and Greg Allan
Hardenburg was killed. The driver, D.A.D., was
subsequently arrested and indicted on charges of vehicular manslaughter,
felony drunk driving, driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding
.08, and driving while his privileges were suspended. In a negotiated
resolution, D.A.D. entered a plea of guilty to vehicular manslaughter,
and the other charges were dismissed. On February 22nd, D.A.D. was
sentenced to 64 months imprisonment and ordered to pay $19,400 in
restitution. [Peter Allen, SEKI, 2/24]

93-87 - Joshua Tree (California) - Rescue

T.L., 20, of Riverside, California, fell while rock scrambling near
Sheeps Pass campground just before noon on February 21st and sustained
injuries to his face, jaw, teeth, and one knee. The injury to his knee
prevented him from climbing down the scree slope. Rangers and SAR
volunteers responded and lowered him 100 feet by litter over the scree
slope. Park medics treated him on scene, and he was then transported to a
hospital by CHP helicopter. [Dispatch, JOTR, 2/23]

93-88 - Joshua Tree (California) - Rescue

On February 21st, W.D., 45, of Huntington Beach, California,
dislocated his right knee while scrambling in the Indian Cove area. W.D.
was with a Sierra Club group practicing scrambling and navigational skills
about a mile up a steep, rocky canyon from the Indian Cove campground.
Rangers responded, splinted W.D.'s leg, and placed him on a backboard.
Because of the rocky terrain and steep slopes, a San Bernadino sheriff's
office helicopter was summoned to assist in the extrication. As the
helicopter hovered next to a rock, rangers moved W.D. over the rocks and
onto the ship. He was transferred to the park ambulance, then taken for
medical treatment. [Dispatch, JOTR, 2/23]

93-89 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Suicide

Rangers discovered the remains of C.K., 43, of Kingman, Arizona, at
Christmas Tree Pass. C.K. died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the
head. The death has been ruled a suicide. [John Jones, LAME, 2/24]
