INCIDENTS

93-101 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Storm Impacts

On the evening of February 19th, major storms struck the Willow Beach and
Katherine Landing areas. Willow Beach received 1.08 inches of rain within a
one-hour period, and Katherine Landing received 2.30 inches over a two-hour
period. Remote rain gauges "alarmed" at Willow Beach, indicating a minimum
intensity of .44 inch in a three-minute period. Flood warning evacuation
sirens were activated at the 60-unit trailer village, and ranger Kevin
Hendricks coordinated the evacuation of 20 trailers and 33 persons.
Approximately 18 inches of flood water rushed down Willow Beach Wash,
cutting away access roads, drainage channels, and 175 feet of a five-foot-
high retaining wall. No injuries were reported. The storm also damaged the
Willow Beach access road, and roads and parking lots in Katherine. More
than 3,200 square yards of asphalt roadway was lost in the two areas. Storm
damage has been estimated at $136,000 for both areas. [Susan Warner, LAME,
3/4]

93-102 - Shenandoah (Virginia) - Storm Impacts

A major winter ice storm struck the higher altitudes of the park's Central
District yesterday. A total of 2.8 inches of rain fell in less than 24
hours along with hail, sleet, snow, freezing rain, and gusting winds; at the
time of the report, the storm was still underway. Heavy ice build-up (more
than an inch) has caused major tree and limb fall, and heavy rains at lower
altitudes have caused flooding. The storm has also inflicted structural
damage on employee housing and created hazardous road and trail conditions.
The significant number of falling trees and limbs made it unsafe for sawyers
to work to keep roads opened; it's estimated that months of extensive
clearing and cleanup will be required to reopen trails. Power outages
occurred in some locations and were expected to continue. [Larry Hakel, CR,
SHEN, 3/4]

93-103 - Colonial (Virginia) - Fuel Spill

At about 4:30 a.m. on March 4th, a tanker truck loaded with 8,500 gallons of
gasoline skidded on a wet roadway and overturned in the median of U.S. 17,
which passes through the park in Yorktown. The driver was not injured and
there was no fire. Local emergency service agencies and NPS personnel
responded, and temporary dikes and booms were put in place to contain any
spills. The tank remained intact and there was only nominal leakage from
one fill pipe on top of the tank. A commercial hazmat firm responded
promptly and will maintain absorbent booms in drainages leading to a nearby
creek as a precautionary measure until the truck is removed. No impact on
park resources is anticipated. [Dick Young, COLO, 3/4]
