Day/Date: Friday, March 12, 1993
Broadcast: By 0800 EST
INCIDENTS
93-111 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Marijuana Eradication
Over recent weeks, activity in the Royal Gardens subdivision suggested that
marijuana cultivation and harvesting activities were continuing in the area.
A surveillance operation was mounted which confirmed this observation.
Three rangers and a county police officer subsequently entered the area and
eradicated 1,300 plants ranging in size from twelve-inch seedlings to mature
plants. If successfully grown and harvested, the entire crop would have had
a market value of over $1 million. [Jim Martin, CR, HAVO, 3/10]
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
El Malpais (New Mexico) - Dendrochronology Record Extended
Henri Grissino-Mayer, a researcher at the University of Arizona's tree ring
laboratory, has extended the tree ring chronology for the park back to 599
A.D. - the third longest known chronology and the longest outside of the
archeological record. Researchers will now be closely studying other areas
with rugged basalt flows and low precipitation, as the ruggedness of the
flows preserves dead-and-down wood from fire and the basalt tends to wick
away moisture. Researchers working in the park, who are now in the last
year of a three-year project, expect to push the chronology back even
further and provide additional climatological and fire history data to the
park. [Ken Mabery, CR, ELMA]
NOTES
1) Vail Agenda Update - The two messages following today's morning report
contain a comprehensive update on the implementation of the Vail Agenda.
Because of its length, it was necessary to send it in two sections. The
same report in WordPerfect 5.1 is attached to the second message as a
separate file for those who wish to download and print it locally.
2) WASO Interpretation - Charles "Corky" Mayo has been selected as the new
chief of interpretation for the Service. He will report for duty on April
19th. Corky comes from PNRO, where he was regional chief of interpretation.
He's worked for the NPS for 20 years, including stints as chief of
interpretation and visitor services at Jefferson National Expansion and
interpretive specialist at George Washington Memorial Parkway. Meanwhile,
the National Park Foundation has selected Patti Reilly to head its "Parks as
Classrooms" program. Patti worked for the NPS for 11 years before
transferring to her most recent position with the Fish and Wildlife Service,
and has been assigned to NPF through an interagency personnel agreement.
She will coordinate the $1 million grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts as
well as other aspects of the NPF program. Her presence at the Foundation
provides an opportunity for increased cooperation between the Service and
NPF. Patti may be reached at 202-785-4500. [Diane Jung, ID/WASO]
