INCIDENTS
93-250 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Follow-up on Falling Fatality
The investigation into the death of A.O., the Job Corps student who
fell to his death on May 11th, has been completed, and it's been established
that his death was accidental. A.O. died instantly from massive trauma
to the head, trunk and extremities. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m.
on Friday at the Job Corps center. Critical incident counseling has been
made available to all employees and students involved in the incident.
Several staff members and students planned to attend A.O.'s funeral in
Flintsville, Tennessee, on Saturday. The investigation into the incident
was conducted by rangers, FBI agents and the local coroner. [RAD/SERO,
5/14]
93-258 - Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania (Virginia) - Serious Employee Injury
Noel Harrison, the park's cultural resource management specialist, was
seriously injured on the evening of May 15th when the vehicle he was driving
was broadsided on the driver's side by a vehicle which had run a stop sign.
Noel received multiple injuries and was flown by helicopter to Fairfax
Hospital, where he underwent surgery on the 16th to relieve pressure on his
spine. He's currently on a respirator with collapsed lungs. Ray Brown of
Manassas National Battlefield, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was also
injured, but not seriously. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene
on foot after the accident. [CRO, FRSP, 5/17]
93-259 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Suicide
On May 8th, rangers responded to a report of a vehicle over the rim on West
Rim Drive at Hopi Point. Ranger Kathy Korte arrived first and found a 1993
Nissan about 500 feet below the rim. Ranger Keith Lober rappeled down to
the wreckage of the vehicle, which had been compressed to a height of about
two feet, and determined that there was a body within it. The victim was
subsequently identified as M.M., 31, of Illinois. The next day,
rangers from the park's technical rescue team were short-hauled to the site
by a helicopter due to severe rockfall danger associated with cliff
rappelling. They employed auto extrication equipment which was sling-loaded
to the scene to remove M.M.'s remains. Preliminary investigation
indicates that the cause of death was suicide and that M.M. had been dead
for over a month. The vehicle will be removed by a heavy-lift helicopter at
the expense of the victim's insurance company. An investigation by rangers
and the Coconino sheriff's department is underway. [Dispatch, GRCA, 5/17]
93-260 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Lightning Fatality
While hiking in Tanner Canyon with three companions on May 13th, D.C.,
21, was struck in the head by lightning. Although his friends
performed CPR for 45 minutes, they were unable to revive him. [Kimberly
Spaulding, GRCA, 5/14]
93-261 - Glen Canyon (Utah/Arizona) - Significant EMS Incident
During the late afternoon of May 9th, a 14-year-old boy, the son of an ARA
Leisure Services employee, was discovered unconscious on Lone Rock Beach.
Park medics responded and treated him for alcohol overdose. He was air
evacuated to Page Hospital, then to Flagstaff Memorial, where he remains in
a semi-conscious state with irregular brain wave patterns. His blood
alcohol content at the time of the incident was .300. [Larry Clark, CR,
GLCA, 5/16]
93-262 - Dinosaur (Colorado) - Drowning
On May 1st, a group of off-duty Colorado Outward Bound guides swamped a raft
on the Yampa River in the upper reaches of Cross Mountain Canyon, a
particularly difficult stretch of whitewater within a BLM-administered area
about 12 miles upstream from the park. E.S., a guide trainee, came
out of his life jacket during the incident and disappeared from view. Park
employees assisted in the search for him, but to no avail. On the evening
of May 14th, E.S.'s body was seen floating past Deerlodge campground,
launch site for whitewater trips in the park. A kayaker was able to
overtake the body approximately two miles downstream and was able to secure
it to shore in a rugged section of canyon. District ranger Ed Pontbriand
assisted members of the Moffat County sheriff's office in a nighttime
recovery of the body. Due to the terrain and difficulty of boat access, the
body was removed from the river bank using technical rope techniques.
Because of this and previous accidents in Cross Mountain Canyon, the sheriff
has closed it to all boating except for kayaks. [Nick Eason, DINO, 5/17]
