On Friday, May 21st, President Clinton announced the appointment of Roger G.
Kennedy, historian, broadcaster and director of the Smithsonian's National
Museum of American History for the past 13 years, to be the director of the
National Park Service.

Secretary Babbitt made the following comments about Kennedy's selection:
"Roger Kennedy has the vision, commitment and experience to provide the
strong leadership to redirect and reinvent the National Park Service during
this time of great challenges and opportunities. He understands the
responsibility for preserving national treasures while affording people
access to them."

Kennedy became director of the National Museum of American History in
Washington in 1979. The author of numerous books and articles, he was
editorial director for the Smithsonian Guide to Historic America and
Rediscovering America. During the past three years, he has hosted several
television series, including Roger Kennedy's Rediscovering America;
Smithsonian Presents: Invention, and The Prize. During the 1950s, Kennedy
was a Washington correspondent and producer for NBC and had his own two-hour
radio show on that network. He also served at various times as an attorney
in the Department of Justice, as special assistant to the Secretary of
Health, Education and Welfare, and as special assistant to the Secretary of
Labor. From 1959 to 1968, he was an official at Northwestern National Bank
in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a vice president for the
Ford Foundation from 1970 to 1979.

Kennedy, who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earned a bachelors
degree from Yale in 1949 and a law degree from the University of Minnesota
in 1952. He has been married to Frances Hefren since 1958 and has one
daughter.
