INCIDENTS
93-280 - Denali (Alaska) - Rescue
A second member of the Marine expedition on Mt. McKinley was evacuated by
helicopter on May 20th. Sgt. A.B., 29, was medevaced from
the 12,000-foot level of the mountain with symptoms of acute mountain
sickness. A.B. had suffered vomiting and diarrhea for 48 hours
before his partners contacted park rangers and was semi-conscious when the
park's Lama helicopter transported him to the Marine's 7,200-foot base camp.
He was then transferred to an Alaska National Guard helicopter and taken to
the hospital. Both he and 31-year-old M.D., who was medevaced from
the mountain on May 20th, have been released following treatment. [John
Quinley, PA, ARO, 5/25]
93-281 - Castillo de San Marcos (Florida) - Fire Bomb
Sometime during the early morning hours of May 24th, a person or persons
exploded a gasoline Molotov cocktail against the north side of the Castillo
moat wall. Park employees discovered the burned area on the wall during
routine opening procedures. Damage to the wall, which is over 300 years
old, is minor and was limited to surface scorching to the coquina stone used
in the fort's construction. Investigation of the incident is continuing.
[C. L. Dale, CR, CASA, 5/25]
93-282 - Valley Forge (Pennsylvania) - MVA with Fatality
Shortly after midnight on May 23rd, a 1990 Geo Storm being driven by S.P.
went out of control while rounding a curve on Yellow Springs Road
near the intersection with Wilson Road and slid broadside into a tree.
S.P. and the two passengers in her vehicle, Kyle Kreider and Peter Boice,
were all taken to separate trauma centers with multiple injuries - S.P. by
ambulance, Kreider and Boice by separate medevac helicopters. Kreider died
of his injuries yesterday. At the time of the report, Boice's condition had
been upgraded to serious. S.P. is also listed in serious condition.
Blood was drawn from S.P. shortly after the accident and is being analyzed
for drugs and alcohol. Ranger Duane Buck is investigating with the
assistance of Tredyffrin police. [Scott Kalbach, CR, VAFO, 5/25]
93-283 - Valley Forge (Pennsylvania) - Car Clouting Arrest
At 11 a.m. on the morning of the 23rd, a visitor reported a suspicious
person looking into vehicles in the lower visitor center parking lot.
Rangers Rick Branagh and Randy Justice set up surveillance on the bluff
above the lot and observed a man matching the visitor's description looking
into vehicles. At noon, the man entered a visitor's vehicle and removed
cash from a purse. He was subsequently stooped and arrested while driving
from the area by assistant chief ranger Doug Germeraad. The man, R.R.,
48, of Philadelphia, has an extensive criminal history for similar
offenses. [Scott Kalbach, CR, VAFO, 5/25]
93-284 - Delaware Water Gap (Pennsylvania/New Jersey) - Rescue
D.P., 15, of Jackson Heights, New York, fell about 25 feet
into a steep ravine near Dingman's Creek on May 21st and suffered
lacerations on his face and back and a broken nose, tibia, and arm.
D.P. was attempting to cross the ravine on a fallen log at the time.
He climbed out of the ravine on his own, then was assisted down the trail to
the Dingman Fall's visitor center by his father and a friend. Rangers
Mueller and Forbes met the group and began medical treatment. D.P.
began convulsing and started to lose consciousness, so an air ambulance from
Lehigh Valley Medical Center was summoned to evacuate him. After further
medical attention, his condition improved, and it's expected that he will be
released soon. [Doyle Nelson, CR, DEWA, 5/24]
