INCIDENTS
93-301 - Yosemite (California) - Falling Fatality
On May 25th, the rangers received a report of a body lying at the top of a
talus slope in the LeConte Gully area. They found the remains of C.F.,
49, of Miami, Florida, at the top of the slope about 800 feet above
the valley floor. C.F. had been reported missing by fellow campers on
May 18th when he failed to return from a day climb. C.F. reportedly had
no climbing experience and failed to tell anyone where he was going or when
he intended to return. The investigation revealed that he fell about 300
feet down a nearly vertical slope. Recovery of the body required the use of
technical rock climbing equipment due to the angle of the slope and
hazardous conditions at the site. Search and rescue volunteers and rangers
Keith McAuliffe, Cameron Sholly and Jessica Rust assisted SAR officer Mike
Ray with the recovery. The death has been ruled accidental. [Greg
Jablonski, YOSE, 6/1]
93-302 - Shenandoah (Virginia) - Apparent Suicide
The park began a search for Washington, D.C., police officer M.M.,
38, of Bladensburg, Maryland, after discovering his unlocked car at Timber
Hollow overlook on the evening of May 27th. M.M. had been reported
missing by his family the day before. An envelope with a suicide note was
discovered in the vehicle. D.C. police were notified, and informed the park
that M.M. had been AWOL from work since failing to show up for an
interview regarding a suspicious fire in the property room where he worked.
On May 31st, a park volunteer discovered M.M.'s body several hundred
yards west of the Appalachian Trail and adjacent to the overlook where his
vehicle was parked. Initial investigation has led investigators to believe
that M.M. died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The park is working
closely with D.C. police in their on-going criminal investigation. [Tim
Alley, CI, SHEN, 6/1]
93-303 - Golden Gate (California) - Human Remains Found
On May 29th, San Francisco police advised US Park Police officers that a
body had been found in the Fort Funston area. A bicyclist had come upon
skeletal remains in a sleeping bag at an illegal campsite hidden in the
bushes and reported it to the police. The body may have been there for
several months. Cause of death, sex, race, age and identification of the
victim have not yet been determined. [USPP Dispatch, 6/1]
93-304 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - Fatality; Unknown Cause
On May 31st, friends who went to visit L.G., 50, and R.L., 35,
on their 25-foot cabin cruiser beached at Sandy Cove found L.G. dead and
R.L. unconscious. Rangers and rescue personnel responded and began CPR on
R.L.. She was then taken by Flight for Life to Valley Medical Center,
where she was hospitalized in critical condition. An investigation into the
incident is underway; foul play, however, has been ruled out. [Mike
Blandford, LAME, 6/1]
93-305 - Natchez Trace (Mississippi/Tennessee) - MVA with Fatality
On May 29th, a car driven by 78-year-old M.S. of Greenwood,
Mississippi, failed to negotiate a curve on the campground road at
Meriwether Lewis and struck a large oak tree at a high rate of speed.
Evidence at the scene indicated that M.S. neither braked nor swerved her
car before impact. The Lewis County coroner has ordered an autopsy to
determine if M.S. may have lost control of her car because of the onset of
a sudden illness. [Gordon Wissinger, CR, NATR, 6/1]
93-306 - Boston (Massachusetts) - Burglary
Park dispatch received a report on the morning of May 24th of a burglary
that had occurred in Building 24 in Charlestown Navy Yard. Office equipment
and computers valued at over $11,000 had been stolen. The building is
occupied by the U.S. Navy Maintenance and Repair Facility, which maintains
the U.S.S. Constitution. The park is working with Boston police and Navy
investigators on the investigation. [Jon Dick, CR, BOST, 6/1]
93-307 - Boston (Massachusetts) - Theft
On the afternoon of May 30th, park dispatch received a report from the Paul
Revere House that a historic painting had just been stolen. The painting, a
framed oil by Rubert Sadler entitled "Paul Revere House with Distant
Steeple", was completed in 1845 and has been appraised at $3,000. The house
was open to visitors at the time. Rangers and Boston police are conducting
an investigation into the theft. The park will be working with museum
cooperators to improve security awareness. [Jon Dick, CR, BOST, 6/1]
93-308 - Delaware Water Gap (New Jersey/Pennsylvania) - Car Clout Arrest
During the month of May, car clouts occurred in various front and
backcountry parking areas in the park's Pennsylvania district. On May 30th,
a surveillance operation of two parking areas was set up. Ranger Ed Apple,
who was watching the Hackers Falls lot, spotted a young male, later
identified as 22-year-old T.D., break into a vehicle and steal
various items. T.D. was arrested by rangers Apple, Troy Mueller, and
Randy Seese. An investigation is continuing to determine if T.D. has
committed other such crimes in the park. [Doyle Nelson, CR, DEWA, 6/1]
93-309 - Lava Beds (California) - ARPA Investigation
Over the Memorial day weekend, the park was involved in what appears to be
the single largest ARPA event in the Northwest - and possibly the United
States - to date. The event, known as "Project Spearhead", involved
officers from BLM, the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, Native
American groups, the Oregon National Guard, Oregon State Police and county
sheriff offices in Oregon, northwestern Nevada and northeastern California.
Lava Beds assisted the northeastern California archeological task force in
the California/Nevada sector of this project in coordinating overflights and
providing backup and site protection on park and interagency lands. The
results of the project will be forthcoming over the next few months;
numerous ARPA felony charges are pending from cases made in Nevada. [Terry
Harris, CR, LABE, 6/1]

- Fires - Asterisk indicates newly reported fire (on this report). T1 and T2
indicate assigned Type I and Type II Teams.

NR - No report received MS - Modified suppression strategy
CL - Controlled MN - Being monitored
CS - Confinement strategy NEC - No estimate of containment
CND - Contained CN (date) - Expected date of containment
3) PARK FIRE REPORTS - No reports today.
4) ANALYSIS - Significant initial attack continues in the Southwest due to
red flag conditions and high to very high indices. Winds predicted for the
Flagstaff and Grand Canyon area yesterday did not materialize. Little
activity is occurring elsewhere in the U.S.
5) PROGNOSIS - Red flag watches for winds are in effect for northwestern
Arizona and New Mexico. Activity is expected to continue in the Southwest
because of high temperatures, winds up to 40 mph, and high to very high
indices. Initial attack should also increase in southern California with
the onset of higher temperatures.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
No field reports today.
NOTES
1) Everglades recently received a "renewal notice" from a company called
Yellow Pages Classified in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The authentic-
looking notice consisted of an invoice and a billing for $147 to renew the
park's listing under "Local Attractions and Museums." An alert receptionist
questioned the billing and investigated; she learned that the billing is a
scam and has nothing to do with Yellow Pages Classified. Anyone receiving
such a notice is asked to fax it to Carol Geri in the Yellow Pages business
office at 215-943-8099. [Pat Tolle, EVER]
2) For those of you who keep track of such things, the last five incidents
on yesterday's morning report were inadvertently misnumbered. Instead of
93-260 to 93-264, they should have been 93-296 to 93-300.
