INCIDENTS
93-426 - Jefferson National Expansion (Missouri) - Follow-up on Flooding
Members of one of Midwest Region's SET teams are arriving in the park and
being deployed to assist park staff in controlling crowds, parking and
traffic (waiting times of up to 90 minutes to enter and exit the park's
garage have occurred); providing a higher law enforcement presence, which
has been required by the influx of panhandlers and vagrants drawn by large
crowds; and assuring visitor safety along the river's waterline, which is
now about half way up the Grand Staircase. A second SET team has been
placed on alert for possible activation to either support or relieve the
first team. Contingency plans and actions underway include the acquisition
of life jackets and other water rescue items and the staging of backup pumps
and drain hoses in the Arch tram loading areas and the IMAX theater. [Deryl
Stone, CR, JEFF, 7/12]
93-470 - Timpanogos Cave (Utah) - Drowning
Just before 5 p.m. on July 8th, M.F., age six, slipped and fell
into the American Fork River while playing along the bank. His father,
B.F., 39, saw him fall in and immediately jumped into the river in
an attempt to rescue him. He was unable to reach the boy, lost visual
contact with him, then had to pull himself from the river in the park's
residential area because the current was extremely fast and dangerous.
Rangers immediately began a search along the river throughout the park and
were soon supported by Utah County sheriff's office SAR and by personnel
from the adjacent Uinta National Forest. The search is continuing along the
river for three miles below the point last seen. An incident command post
has been set up at a picnic area inside the park. Efforts to recover the
body are being hindered by water levels much higher than normal for mid0
summer. [Mike Tranel, CR, TICA, 7/12]
93-471 - Lassen Volcanic (California) - Search
Rangers received a report early on the evening of July 10th that L.F.
and his three-and-a-half year old daughter were overdue from a hike
from the Bumpass Hell parking lot to the Kings Creek picnic area. A hasty
search was initiated, but had to be halted due to deep snow and very icy
conditions. The next morning, a search was begun which involved three CARDA
dog teams, two helicopters, and personnel from the Forest Service, Shasta
County SAR, and the NPS. A total of 110 people were dedicated to the
effort. L.F. and his daughter were found at 9:30 a.m. near the park's
south boundary by rangers Chris Schmidt and Jean Salazar. The two rangers
were working as a containment team and were assigned to an area of high
probability due to terrain and a past history of lost persons in the area.
L.F. had twisted his knee during a fall on a steep side hill; his
daughter was in good condition. The two were evacuated by helicopter to
Manzanita Lake and reunited with their family. [CRO, LAVO, 7/12]
