INCIDENTS

93-595 - New River Gorge (West Virginia) - Drug Seizure

On August 10th and 11th, NPS investigators, rangers and members of the
Raleigh County regional drug task force executed a number of search warrants
in the park, arrested four people on state felony drug charges, and arrested
two additional people on federal drug charges. One of those arrested on
federal charges had previously done prison time for murder. During the
investigation and subsequent arrests, approximately 30 pounds of processed
marijuana valued at about $100,000 was seized. Drug paraphernalia and three
firearms, including a 9mm machine pistol, were also confiscated. Further
seizures of property, possibly including cars and/or buildings, may be
forthcoming. This case originated through the observations and initial
investigations of patrol rangers working out of the park's Grandview
Subdistrict. [Chris Schrader, CI, NERI, 8/12]

93-596 - Mammoth Cave (Kentucky) - Marijuana Eradication

On the morning of August 12th, rangers conducted marijuana eradication
operations at three cultivation sites that were discovered in the park's
northern district. A total of 65 plants were found and destroyed; the
valuation has been placed at $70,500. Significant resource damage resulted
from cultivation, including the destruction of numerous small trees, ground
disturbance, and the use of chemicals, including fertilizer. Rangers were
first alerted to the possibility of marijuana plots in the area when two
park visitors reported being stalked by an unidentified male as they hiked
the White Oak trail. There are suspects in the case, but it appears that
they abandoned the sites after the incident with the hikers. [Phil Veluzat,

NOTES:

- Fires - Asterisk indicates newly reported fire (on this report). T1 and T2
indicate assigned Type I and Type II Teams.
- Status - The following abbreviations are employed:

NR - No report received MS - Modified suppression strategy
CL - Controlled MN - Being monitored
CS - Confinement strategy NEC - No estimate of containment
CND - Contained CN (date) - Expected date of containment

3) PARK FIRE REPORTS - Little fire activity is being reported anywhere in
the system. Fires in and near Yukon-Charley Rivers were flown by NPS
aircraft on Wednesday. None of the fires were very active, and acreage
gains were small.

4) ANALYSIS - Initial attack fire activity was minimal yesterday, and there
were no significant large fires in the entire United Sates.

5) PROGNOSIS - The West will be mostly sunny, with isolated thunderstorms.
This will result in fewer new fires and will help in the meeting of
containment dates on large fires.
