INCIDENTS

93-581 - Big Thicket (Texas) - Follow-up on Employee Illness

Mike Livingston, the park's chief ranger, remains in critical condition at
Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. He was taken off advanced life support
over the weekend, and doctors have expressed some guarded optimism about his
condition. They believe that Mike may have been the victim of a virus which
attacked his heart, but this has not yet been confirmed. Messages can be
sent to his family through the park. Further updates on Mike's condition
will be provided as they become available. [Bonnie Winslow, RAD/SWRO, 8/16]

93-604 - Hawaii Volcanoes (Hawaii) - Hurricane Fernanda

The park began making preparations on Sunday for the possible arrival of
Hurricane Fernanda, which was then on track to strike the islands with winds
over 100 mph. Several roads were closed and all backcountry hiking and
camping was prohibited until further notice. Backcountry rangers flew into
the park's remote backcountry sites during the day and notified campers of
the closure. Two hikers were flown out to help expedite the evacuation.
The park was preparing to close the campground at Namakani Paio on short
notice, and campers were being urged to seek shelter elsewhere. As of this
morning, however, forecasters were predicting that the storm would pass to
the northeast of the islands. [Gail Minami, Acting CR, HAVO, 8/16]

93-605 - Yellowstone (Wyoming) - Drug Arrests

On Friday, August 13th, Yellowstone rangers served arrest warrants on 12
concession employees who were charged with misdemeanor counts of possession
or delivery of a controlled substance. All those arrested were employed by
TW Services in the Old Faithful area. The arrests stemmed from a six-week-
long undercover investigation which was supported by special drug
enforcement funding. Fourteen rangers participated in the arrests; they
were assisted by a drug dog and deputy from the Gallatin County (Montana)
sheriff's office. [CRO, YELL, 8/13]

93-606 - Grand Teton (Wyoming) - Climbing Fatality

C.R., 17, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was killed in a fall just after noon
on August 13th while returning from a successful climb of Exum Ridge.
Corbin was descending steep snow a short distance below the upper saddle
when he slipped, failed to self-arrest, and fell about 1,000 feet down a
steep couloir containing mixed rock and snow. He died of massive head
injuries. Rangers responded almost immediately to reports of the accident
and evacuated his body by helicopter at 4 p.m. [Renny Jackson, GRTE, 8/16]

93-607 - Canaveral (Florida) - Drowning

Late on the afternoon of August 15th, A.H. of Deland, Florida,
drowned at Apollo Beach when he swam out into the surf to get his two sons.
It appears that he swam out too far and was not able to make it back to
shore. [Superintendent, CANA, 8/16]

93-608 - Yosemite (California) - Falling Fatality

J.L., 19, of Laguna Beach, California, was hiking with his brother
on Yosemite Falls trail on August 15th when he became confused and wandered
off the trail onto Sunnyside Bench. In an attempt to get back on the trail,
J.L. fell between 100 and 300 feet. Rangers evacuated him to Yosemite
Medical, but J.L. died en route. [Jeff Sullivan, YOSE, 8/16]

93-609 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Falling Fatality

L.J. of Mesa Arizona and a companion were drinking alcohol while
sitting on the canyon rim near Lee's Ferry on August 15th when JacL.J.kson fell
600 feet to his death. Although the incident occurred at 1 p.m., rangers
didn't receive the report until that night because L.J. had the keys to
the vehicle they'd employed in his pocket. Rangers found L.J.'s body at
6 a.m. the following morning after a long rappell to the site. L.J.'s
companion told investigators that he'd turned away from L.J. at the time
of the incident and was therefore unable to determine why he'd fallen.
[Terrill Gibbons, GRCA, 8/16]

93-610 - Shenandoah (Virginia) - Falling Fatality

L.H., 43, of King George, Virginia, was standing on the cliffs near
Crescent overlook on the afternoon of August 15th when he lost his footing
and fell approximately 100 feet. The incident was witnessed by friends and
family. University of Virginia med center doctors advised park medics to
cease further medical efforts after a patient assessment was called in to
them. It took approximately three hours to remove his body. Alcohol is
suspected as a contributing factor. [Janice Pauley, SHEN, 8/16]
