INCIDENTS
93-682 - Grand Teton (Wyoming) - Rescue
B.J., 48, of Boulder, Colorado, sustained a possible arm fracture,
lacerations and other injuries when he fell about twenty feet while
descending the south side of Mt. Moran on the morning of September 5th.
Rangers were notified that they were overdue that afternoon, but were unable
to locate the climbers during helicopter reconnaissance flights. B.J.'s
climbing partner hiked out to report the accident and reached rangers around
8 p.m. Due to limited remaining daylight, a last attempt to locate B.J.
and insert rescue personnel proved unsuccessful. A helicopter short-hauled
rescuers to the site on the morning of the 6th; they stabilized and
evacuated him. B.J., who was dressed in shorts and nylon running
tights, had spent two nights near the summit of the 12,600-foot peak in
inclement weather with near freezing temperatures. The descent that he and
his partner had attempted was begun without either a rope or hardware.
Neither was familiar with the route or possessed a description of it. [Mark
Magnuson, Jenny Lake SDR, GRTE, 9/7]
93-683 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Falling Fatality
On September 7th, 34-year-old L.N. of Houston, Texas, was visiting
the Cape Royale area on the North Rim when she stepped on a loose rock and
fell about 75 feet. She died immediately of massive head injuries. Her
companion did not witness the incident, but heard the noise of the fall,
found L.N. missing, and reported the incident to rangers. An
investigation into her death is underway. [Kevin Cochary, GRCA, 9/8]
93-684 - Great Smokies (Tennessee/North Carolina) - Suicide
Rangers found 38-year-old R.J. of Morristown, Tennessee, lying on
the driver's seat of a locked Mercedes 190 sedan in the Newfound Gap parking
area on the morning of September 8th. They gained access by breaking a
window and found that R.J. was alive but suffering from a self-inflicted
gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to the University of Tennessee
Medical Center, where he died that evening. Further investigation lead to
the discovery of a loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun, four suicide
notes, and a micro cassette tape recorder with a 37-minute-long tape to his
family. The tape indicated that R.J. shot himself at 1:30 a.m. that
morning. A fifth suicide note was subsequently located in the mailbox at
his residence. Jefferson County officers had recently interviewed R.J.
regarding some thefts that had occurred at his place of employment; larceny
charges against him were pending. [Dave Panebaker, North Carolina ACR,
GRSM, 9/8]
93-685 - Martin Luther King (Georgia) - Armed Robbery
On the evening of September 6th, Atlanta police advised rangers that four
women had been robbed at gun point at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Community
Center. Cash, jewelry and car keys were taken. Rangers secured the crime
scene while Atlanta police attempted to locate assistance for the victims.
[Johnny Sims, CR, MALU, 9/7]
93-686 - Martin Luther King (Georgia) - Assault
Rangers were dispatched to a disturbance at a park residence on the evening
of September 6th and found that L.W., 41, had attempted to break in
to the building to escape pursuit from seven teenaged males. The teenagers
were attempting to avenge an alleged fight between L.W. and a 14-year-old,
who reported that he'd entered an abandoned house to consummate a
transaction with a local prostitute when L.W. attacked him. The juvenile
returned to the area with friends and relatives to settle the score. They
were detained until Atlanta police officers arrived and later released.

FIRE ACTIVITY
1) FIRE SITUATION - Preparedness Level I
2) FIRE SUMMARY
State Agency Area Fire 9/8 9/9 Status
CA CDF San Diego * Clevenger - 600 CN 9/9
NV BLM Elko Mary's Creek 1,325 1,325 CND
Ely Blue 200 200 CN 9/9
NOTES:
- Fires - Asterisk indicates newly reported fire (on this report). T1 and T2
indicate assigned Type I and Type II Teams.
- Status - The following abbreviations are employed:
NR - No report received MS - Modified suppression strategy
CL - Controlled MN - Being monitored
CS - Confinement strategy NEC - No estimate of containment
CND - Contained CN (date) - Expected date of containment
3) ANALYSIS - Initial attack activity continued in Texas and northern
Florida yesterday and increased in California. Containment targets should
be met today on large fires in Nevada and California. No significant fire
activity occurred anywhere else in the United States.
4) PROGNOSIS - A red flag warning is in effect for very warm temperatures
and low humidity for western Washington, which may cause an increase in
initial attack activity. A red flag watch has been posted for the northern
Sacramento Valley for low relative humidity and drying fuels. High pressure
associated with a dry, warm air mass dominates northern California, the
Northwest and the Great Basin. Few thunderstorms are expected in that area.
Initial attack activity will likely moderate. Partly cloudy skies,
scattered showers, and thunderstorms are forecast for the South, which
should minimize fire activity.
