INCIDENTS
93-706 - Olympic (Washington) - Search
On September 13th, the Clallam County sheriff's office advised the park that
M.H., 30, S.H., 26, and J.N., 22, had
failed to return as planned from a backpacking trip somewhere on the North
Peninsula. Their vehicle was located that afternoon at Barnes Point, and a
search was begun for the trio. Fourteen searchers looked for clues along
the trails leading from Barnes Point, a helicopter searched the high country
and areas around Lake Crescent, and an investigation team interviewed the
family and other hikers in an effort to determine where the party might have
gone. The weather has been good and is expected to remain mild; all three
hikers are in good condition and well equipped. An incident team is
managing the search. [Bill Pierce, CR, OLYM, 9/14]
93-707 - Rocky Mountain (Colorado) - Search and Rescue; Fatality
On the evening of Sunday, September 12th, 27-year-old K.T. of
Thornton, Colorado, and fellow climber Bo Judd were reported overdue from a
climb on the Kieners route on Longs Peak. A search was begun, but a storm
front brought zero visibility and up to 15 inches of snow in the search area
between Sunday night and Tuesday morning. K.T.'s body was found at 11 a.m.
Tuesday near 12,200-foot Chasm Lake, where he apparently died of exposure.
Judd was found alive, but suffering from severe frostbite to his
extremities. [Joe Evans, CR, ROMO, 9/14]
93-708 - North Cascades (Washington) - Rescue
On Saturday, September 11th, a six-person climbing team was ascending the
north face of 9,127-foot Mt. Shuksan. While cramponning up Winnie's Slide,
a steep approach to the Upper Curtis Glacier, the lead climber of a three-
person team began to fall. His two partners were unable to arrest the fall,
and all three fell approximately 200 feet. T.K., 23, suffered a
lower leg fracture; C.H., 21, suffered severe lacerations to a leg;
the third climber received only minor injuries. Two climbers descended the
mountain via Fisher Chimneys and reported the accident to park personnel.
The park and Whatcom County sheriff's office established a joint ICS command
and initiated rescue efforts. Because severe weather prevented helicopter
flights, a rescue party of rangers and volunteers from Bellingham Mountain
Rescue started overland to the remote location. The injured climbers
endured a night of thunderstorms, hail and five inches of new snow at their
bivy site. On Sunday morning, the weather cleared, and a helicopter was
able to land and evacuate the injured climbers. [CRO, NOCA, 9/13]
93-709 - Kennesaw Mountain (Georgia) - ARPA Conviction
In September, 1991, A.B. and B.R. were apprehended while
metal detecting in the woods of Old Highway 41. Rangers discovered a total
of 17 holes from which 50 artifacts were taken. The metal detector and
several tools used in digging the holes were seized and photographs and
other evidence was collected. B.R. and A.B. were charged under ARPA
after rangers conferred with the assistant U.S. attorney. In June, 1992,
B.R. pled guilty to a misdemeanor ARPA violation; she was sentenced to a
year's probation and 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay
$1,112 in restitution. A.B. failed to show for his scheduled court
date, so a warrant was issued for both the ARPA violation and for bail
jumping. He was subsequently located in San Diego, California, extradited
to Atlanta, and released on supervised probation. Prior to his scheduled
court appearance, A.B. again fled. He was apprehended in Orlando,
Florida, in March, brought back to Atlanta, and incarcerated until a trial
could be scheduled. On September 7th, he pled guilty to both a felony ARPA
violation and to bail jumping. He was sentenced to six months in federal
jail on each count (to be served concurrently) and a year's probation. He
was also ordered to pay $1,145 in restitution. [CRO, KEMO, 9/13]
