INCIDENTS

93-718 - Lassen Volcanic (California) - Accidental Shooting

Around midnight on September 18th, K.B. and L.B. were unloading
their vehicle at the Manzanita Lake campground when K.B. accidentally
dropped a canvas bag containing a holstered .22 caliber revolver. The
revolver discharged and wounded her in the upper right thigh. L.B.,
her husband of one day, initiated emergency treatment, then drove her to
Mercy Medical Center in Redding, where rangers met them and investigated the
incident. K.B. was treated and released. [Kurt Veeck, LAVO, 9/21]

FIRE ACTIVITY

Preparedness Level I. No significant activity reported or anticipated.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

El Malpais (New Mexico) - Dendrochronology

A piece of Douglas fir wood which was found in the park has made it possible
for researchers at the Tree Ring Lab to extend tree ring dating for the area
to 180 B.C. - the longest such chronology the lab has established for any
area, and the only chronology anywhere that extends into the B.C. era. A
piece of wood dating to 180 A.D. was also found in the park. It is the
second oldest piece to be found in El Malpais. [Ken Mabery, CR, ELMA]
