INCIDENTS

93-768 - Ozark (Missouri) - Special Event

On Friday, October 8th, a rally was held at park headquarters to protest
park plans to remove approximately 20 feral horses from Ozark. The event
included a short parade with 300 horse riders, followed by speeches by
various politicians and members of the Missouri Wild Horse League. A total
of 700 people were involved in the event. No significant incidents occurred
during the rally. [Tim Blank, CR, OZAR, 10/13]

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Yukon-Charley Rivers (Alaska) - Peregrine Falcons

Two adult female peregrine falcons that were trapped in the park and
outfitted with radio transmitters have been tracked to Florida and Honduras.
On September 17th, one bird was located near Everglades; on October 5th, the
other was in eastern Honduras and travelling south. The transmitters, which
were attached by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel last July, send
radio signals to an Argos satellite which measures their doppler shifts.
The data is relayed by the satellite to a central tracking office in France,
where the birds' locations are plotted on a map. That information is then
sent back to Fish and Wildlife's office in Fairbanks. This is the first
attempt at tracking peregrine falcons through satellite telemetry. Fish and
Wildlife should be able to track the birds throughout the ten-month life of
the transmitter batteries. [Jan Dick, YUCH]
