INCIDENTS

93-771 - Natural Bridges (Utah) - Search and Rescue

At 7:30 p.m. on October 17th, a search was begun for R.S., a 60-
year-old German citizen, who was overdue from a hike. Seventeen searchers
from the park, San Juan county and Utah state parks worked through the night
in rugged terrain, rain and temperatures in the low 30s to find R.S., who
was dressed only in light cotton clothing. At 3:30 a.m., she was found in
White Canyon, about nine miles from the point where she was supposed to meet
her party and six miles from where she'd left the marked trail. Shulze was
cold but otherwise in good condition and was able to hike out with searchers
at daybreak. [Jim Ireland, NABR, 10/19]

93-772 - Grand Canyon (Arizona) - Rescue

On the evening of October 16th, a 15-year-old girl was exploring a mine
shaft near Havasu Falls with other members of her church group when she fell
50 feet down a vertical shaft and suffered fractures to her right arm and
ribs. She was extricated by BIA officers and a Public Health Service
physician, but could not be flown out because all rescue helicopters in
northern Arizona were grounded due to severe weather. The park helicopter
flew to the area the following morning by taking a route through the canyon
and keeping below the storm ceiling. Rangers continued administering
advanced life support measures which had been begun by the doctor. During a
brief break in the storm, the girl was flown out to the South Rim,
transferred to an ambulance, and taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, where
she was treated for the fractures and hypothermia. [CRO, GRCA, 10/19]

93-773 - Lake Mead (Nevada) - MVA with Two Fatalities

The park received a report of a vehicle over the side of the Callville Bay
access road on the afternoon of October 15th. Responding rangers found a
Toyota pickup truck and the bodies of its two occupants - J.B. and
C.H., both 19 and from Las Vegas. It was subsequently
learned that the pair had been missing since October 9th. [Terri Greene,
LAME, 10/19]

93-774 - Blue Ridge (North Carolina/Virginia) - MVA with Fatality

W.A. of Independence, Virginia, was killed in a motor vehicle
accident on the parkway late on the evening of October 8th. Rangers are
investigating the accident; no further details are available. [Larry
Freeman, BLRI, 10/18]
