INCIDENTS

93-431 - Colonial (Virginia) - Follow-up on ARPA Indictments

On October 22nd, the three North Carolina men who were caught removing
artifacts from the park last November were sentenced in federal district
court in Newport News, Virginia. Each of the three men - S.T.,
46, M.R., 34, and R.G., 45 - was ordered to
pay $5,000 in restitution, forfeit all artifacts and equipment, and
cooperate in the filming of a video on relic hunting. S.T. and M.R.
were placed on a year's probation; R.G. was convicted of a felony ARPA
violation and placed on three years' probation. All three men agreed to
refrain from any metal detecting or relic hunting on private or public lands
during their probation. An Isuzu Trooper used in the incident will also be
forfeited to the government. Parks interested in further information on
these three men should contact Jim Burnett, the chief ranger at Colonial.

93-777 - Mount Rainier (Washington) - Climbing Fatality

A.B., 31, and her partner, B.K., were descending from a
successful ascent of 6500-foot Pinnacle Peak in the Tatoosh Range when
A.B. slipped, knocked Kenny down, then fell another 250 to 300 feet.
Kenny, however, was able to stop his fall after about 20 feet; he called for
help, and members of another climbing party came to his rescue. They then
located A.B., who was unconscious and bleeding internally. When A.B.
stopped breathing, a registered nurse in the assisting party began CPR,
which she continued until rangers arrived on scene. Doctors at Madigan Army
Hospital subsequently advised them to terminate rescue efforts when A.B.
failed to respond. The body was carried out and turned over to the county
medical examiner. An investigation is underway. A.B. was a faculty
member at the school of business at Portland State University. [Comm
Center, MORA, 10/24]

93-778 - Lava Beds (California) - Attempted Burglary

Just before midnight on October 21st, a person or persons attempted to break
into the park's entrance fee station by removing the station's door from its
frame. The removal of the door set off an alarm, though, and the would-be
burglar(s) fled. Rangers were on scene within minutes, but were unable to
locate anyone within the area. The investigation is continuing, and a
suspect has been identified. The station has since been modified to deter
this method of entry. About $1,000 in fees were in the structure at the
time of the incident. [Terry Harris, CR, LABE, 10/25]
